This is a great listen on why guys enter the portal. Go to the 9:00 minute mark.

Thanks, 94. While the TP gives athletes an opportunity to switch schools as they see fit, it has also radically impacted the way coaches manage talent.

The sword clearly cuts both ways.

G5 programs will be a feeder system for P5 programs. Many of our better players will take the leap for cash. NIL and portal suck especially for programs like APP.

I like it less than anybody, because it takes away what has helped build our successes. The players can't be blamed because of what the system has evolved in to. You are very right, but there is another edge that we get players coming down for playing time that would never give APP a chance in the high school recruiting process.

Since 2022 we have gained 14 players from P5 teams and lost a total of 4. McLeod, Noel and Roof. I reluctantly count Everrett in that group but he was leaving anyways because his Dad is a pr!ck.

I’m not sure if this is good or bad. We probably were able to keep a few guys from going P5 lately (Aguilar, Robinson, Nate, Kanye?) which is good. It shows guys want to stay here and win. But on the flip side, maybe we’ve been lacking talent and players good enough to make the jump to P5. Maybe a little of both.

The original post alluded to NIL being the beginning of the end for G5 programs. A recent podcast that I shared shows that NIL isn’t the overall driving reason for guys leaving.

Bottom line is that losing an extremely talented player hurts.

True, but with all do respect, we haven’t lost anyone that wasn’t replaceable.

Fair. But if we have McLead, Nate Johnson doesn’t get the reps that he did.

Hard to answer that without a full understanding of who has actually been approached about entering the portal for the purpose of transferring to a “better” program.

Exhibit A.

Football is a season behind basketball it seems with the fluidity of the TP and NIL. I'd expect the number of transfers to increase this December, hope I'm wrong.

It will likely get worse before it gets better.
