Punter
Would like to know if anyone has seen our punters kick? Interested in who looks good in camp so far.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Punter
As of last report Subotsch and Critcher were taking most of the reps. Word was that, while each was making some good punts that they weren't as consistent as we wanted them to be at this point (some 9/10's then throw in a few 4/10's). Still a work in progress but they are working hard every day. We'll know more in a week as to who takes the top spot.
Before the question is asked, as for our other kickers Rubino has been kicking FG's well, as has his backup Chandler Station. And both are also kicking off. Again, we'll know more in about a week if Rubino will handle both or if Station will take kickoffs and Rubino FG's only.

Re: Punter
Thanks again Moose.
Kicking it out of the end zone on Kickoffs and punting to flip the field position really helped us win games over the years. These two special teams cannot be overlooked for the Mountaineers to win the conference again this year. Hope everyone finds their role on the team and no one P/K/PK is asked to do multiple duties.

Don't need one. We are going to score on all possessions this year.

I was a punter. I kicked all year and that was in 1970. There is no excuse for not being consistent today. Better shoes, training etc.

Re: Punter
Bentlee really was a valuable special teams player. Hope his bro or Subotsch can step up. Rubino grew up a lot over the course of last year.

Re: Punter
App has been very fortunate over the years in the kicking game. I know that we have had ups and downs (like everyone else) with kicking game (see Zach Matics,etc...) but App has had some big time punters who have flipped the field for us and really helped out our already stout Defense during many seasons. Looking all the way back to Mark Royals in the late 70's/early 80's to Harold Alexander, Sam Martin, and Bentlee for the last few seasons, we have been well represented in kicking game. I truly hope that this continues and that either the young Critcher or the "thunder from down under" can take our special teams to the next level once again.

Re: Punter
A lot of folks talk down the importance of the kicking game and go so far as to say that kickers aren't even real football players. We have seen first hand over the past several years how important those guys really are. We have had a few games lost due to missed kicks. We also won a couple due to clutch kicks. I've been one to say that I don't know how these kids are able to kick FG's and punt the ball in front of screaming hostile environments. I have faith that we will once again produce quality punters and kickoff specialists.

Re: Punter
Kicking is what helped us beat Michigan. If I recall correctly, it was their kickers first game action and that split second hesitation on his kicks allowed us to block 2 field goal attempts. Watching the Critcher brothers in warm ups last year they looked very similar as far as height and distance. Let's hope that will translate well to game time for Rylee.

Re: Punter
Over time we might actually have a pretty lethal duo punting. Subotsch has trained as a rugby punter while Critcher is more traditional. When both have game experience, both specialties could come in handy....Critcher for a high kick that is meant for hang time or to pin offenses near the goal line and if a rugby kick is executed correctly (which i would assume his are), they can completely flip the field).

Re: Punter
Let's add punter Joe Parker ('73-'76) who was named to the Playboy All-America team in '76 or '77 under Coach Brakefield. Mark Royals came along a just a tad later under Sparky Woods.MDaniels84 wrote:App has been very fortunate over the years in the kicking game. You must have been on the team with Steve Loflin during Coach Messere's last season. Did you get to play for Coach Brakefield?Rekdiver wrote:I was a punter. I kicked all year and that was in 1970. There is no excuse for not being consistent today. Better shoes, training etc.

I didnt mean to imply at App..... high school and retired to drink beer and study part time at App. Even then football was as big time commitment.asu66 wrote:You must have been on the team with Steve Loflin during Coach Messere's last season. This is the reason I said "most of the reps" when I answered 88's question. I knew Station was getting reps at punter as well but the names I heard most often were Subotsch and Critcher. We'll see soon enough who wins the job.

Re: Punter
Who will punt and who will kickoff?
Punting (P) - Three Players battling. Seems like the answer remains unclear with just 2 weeks to go. Hope one of the three will step up their game and win the position so coaches are not forced to into a tough call about who will consistently perform under pressure.
Kickoff (K) - Two players competing. If we are not kicking it out of the end zone this year, can we kick it high enough to tackle the returner inside the 25yd line. I would expect we may see more hard hits when covering the shorter kicks. We don't need any of these full force injuries.
Place Kicking (PK) - Rubino will continue to mature, hopeful he can extend his field goal range beyond 40 yards and still drive it through the uprights 9/10.
***Kickoffs and Punting must be strong this year to prevent game momentum swings.
