Wofford often gets mispronounced, too.

Re: APPALACHIAN!!
I give up on embedding it. I've done so successfully before, but I'm not a computer programmer and I think its ridiculous to have to find exactly where to clip a URL code in order to do something as simple as embed a youtube video. No other forum is like this.

Re: APPALACHIAN!!
I think we get a little too sensitive about this at times. You have to realize that both ways are acceptable when referring to the area or mountains. We have the right to establish the correct pronunciation for the university but not the chain of mountains. This is not like miss pronouncing Wofford. These people mean no harm and it does not mean they cannot be trusted. Use the opportunity to correct them and talk about a great university.

The primary standard pronunciation of the range is with a long-A, as "app-uh-LAY-chan" or [æ.pəˈle.tʃən]. The alternative pronunciation, with a short-A, "app-uh-LATCH-an" or [æ.pəˈlæ.tʃən], is often used east of the range in the Piedmont region, such as in North Carolina. The short-A pronunciation is used for Appalachian State University of Boone, North Carolina. It turns out that the shor ...

Re: APPALACHIAN!!
if you just clip off the part after v= and put that in the youtube section it works. Not sure why it is that way but it works if you do it.

Re: APPALACHIAN!!
I don't get how the "lach" syllable could or should ever have an "i" or "y" sound in it. You never hear "AppaLAYchicola" for the city in Florida, do you? I used to deal with high school and college students from all over the country. Whenever there was an friendly argument (depending on the area of the country they were from) about the proper pronunciation, my response was ALWAYS "I have a DEGREE from there....DO YOU?" That always won!

I met a Western Grad once (mutual friends) that pronounces Wichita State, Wah-cheeta-state. One of the dumbest human beings I have ever had this misfortune of meeting.AppGrad78 wrote:Just for fun, I put together a list of Division-I institutions that are occasionally mispronounced:

Re: APPALACHIAN!!
It seems likely, therefore, if I am traveling and stop at a restaurant, I should ask how to pronounce "Appalachian".
If pronounced incorrectly, I can safely assume they don't have sweet tea.

Yea, and my dad, a true southerner born and raised in Mississippi, pronounces McDonald's as "MacDonalds".

A follow-up question would be "is bar-b-q a verb or noun"? That culls them down quickly as well.App74 wrote:It seems likely, therefore, if I am traveling and stop at a restaurant, I should ask how to pronounce "Appalachian".
