Salary of Coaches

I have always been a firm believer that we get more out of less than anyone else in college football. We recruit kids that aren't predicted to play college football at a high level and yet we continue to win big with these kids and send some into the league. This link shows all the coaches salaries and Drink isn't even the highest paid in the Belt, but he is clearly the best. The AAC pays way more than we do, but we still produce high level football. It is somewhat unbelievable how much so many of these coaches make nowadays. One look at this list, and it is more than clear that we aren't able to keep a good coach for too long.

Living in Boone is worth about $500k-1mil. Over the salary.
I bet Sat would have stayed if we could have done 2 maybe 2.5 mil a year. There is something to be said about making that kind of money and not having to live in a flat suburbia, blah landscape. Especially when raising children.

I agree, but there are a lot of great college towns. I am partial to Boone but I bet there are a lot of others that I could have fallen in love with as well had I gone there. It is amazing if you look at it by conference, the AAC pays way more than the Sun Belt, the lowest that is known gets twice what Drink makes. I must say, I am in no way an Irish fan but they seem to get the best bargain in football as Kelly "only" makes 1.665 million and he has won a lot of game for them. As a quick comparison, NCSU pays 3.25 million and doesn't get nearly the wins. Heck, Wyoming pays 2.137 for their coach. Satt makes a cool 3.25 million this year, not too shabby.

I love Boone, probably my favorite place in the world but sorry guys it’s not going to keep good coaches at App. If that was the case a coach like Satterfield would go spend 3 or 4 years at a P5 program, make his money and come back. We had our unicorn with Coach Moore. From here forward it’s a good coach every 3 to 5 years or a bad coach we have to fire.

It's is sickening the amount of money they pay coaches.... This is why athletics will fail. The ncaa doesn't want to pay athletes but will allow coaches to make MILLIONS and then even do advertising and make more. NCAA should cap coaches salaries and restrict them from doing advertising for pay unless they want to change the rules for athletes.

I've read before how the AAC has a much more lucrative TV contract than the Sun Belt so that's how they're able to pay those types of salaries. As it is now, we're subject not just to P5s hiring away our coaches but also the AAC and top tier MWC schools poaching. If we're able to join the AAC it'd be a huge boost to our athletic budget and then we'd only have to worry about P5s.
Let's remember also we need to hold onto DG as he could be hired away at some point with the track record he's building assuming the Kerns hire works out.

If only tripling our budget for coaches' salaries were as easy as speaking the words.
Also, while we all love Boone, don't fool yourself into thinking everyone values (or dislikes) the same things in a place to live that you do. A lot of people prefer to live in a city.

At least we pay enough that we can avoid being poached by nearly all G5 schools. What we also offer (outside of being able to live and raise a family in Boone) is a proven winner in a G5 conference with some national recognition. That is probably our biggest asset as all G5 programs are stepping stones and the goal of most G5 coaches is to be a P5 HC. We've proven that a HC here can make a successful transition to a P5 program, that could literally be worth millions to any prospective coach.

A general question was raised the other day on the DG show. He asked would you as a fan be okay with your mediocre football team (6-6) going to a bowl game? Most folks say yes. It is obvious why coaches say yes. In addition to the extra free practice most, if not all of them have bonuses tied to things like that. Didn't Satt (and probably Drink) have a bunch of incentives included in their contracts? We have debated and addressed this particular topic many times. It is incredible the money paid to these dudes, especially the ones who coach crappy teams with no hope of much success.

I was thinking the same thing. Boone may be objectively better than Statesboro, but there are plenty of folks who love Atlanta, Mobile, and the states of Louisiana and Texas in general.

I think that it would be miserable to live in Syracuse for the winter months and my family would not be crazy about it but if they paid me $3M per to coach their crappy football team I would tell the family to suck it up. LOL

What is crazy about that contract is that Drink will make more if App wins a non New Years 6 Bowl game than if App wins a New Years 6 Bowl game. That is just crazy to me. Although, he has some nice bonus opportunities. Just winning more than 9 games and the conference title nets a cool extra 100K for Drink, add in another 25K for a bowl appearance and 15K for bowl win (non New Years 6) and he could see 140k extra. Not bad considering how often App has accomplished those goals in the past few years. So in years that App wins more than 9 games, play a P5 school, are conference champs and win the bowl game, Drink will make his 750k plus bonuses of 150k for a total of 900k for the season. Oh, he also gets more bonus money if the team keeps the grades up. It really is a pretty sweet gig, it just pales in comparison to many other schools.

Obviously I don’t have the required skills, but I would be ecstatic to be paid 900k or even 750k (or much less) a year to live in Boone for as long as I wanted.
I know these guys want to challenge themselves and prove themselves on the highest level and biggest stage, but for nearly a million a year, I could be pretty content being a big fish in a pretty damn nice sized pond...

Don't forget about that sweet, sweet (though sugar free) Diet Mountain Dew money!

Athletes are already paid. It’s called the NFL, NBA, and MLB of which very few ever get a contract without playing in college.

And to compound, the guys we want are the guys who would never be satisfied long term with what we can offer. That "I'm taking this low budget program and whipping your P5 a$$ with it" attitude.

If we can get to the AAC then I would imagine we would be able to pay 1M more a year and that would keep coaches around a little longer. It is all about the money.
For those talking about the players they are already paid at P5 programs. It just is not legal.
Go look at how much money the SEC brings in and then spends. Many P5 schools are just breaking even or making only a couple million after coaching salaries, facilities, etc.

Unless I miscounted he can earn up to $750K per year? Did he earn an entire year's salary in 2018? I don't see any mention of bowl or conference championship bonus.
