Imagine…………. That is a nice sentiment…. but the reality is quite different. Of course we miss on kids… so does every FBS team. It is not unusual to miss on a kid as a matter fact I would it’s more the rule than the exception. Look the pros miss during the draft regularly. They have far more resources and they miss. Stating the obvious, colleges miss all the time. Talent and the development of the elusive potential is a fickle business. The idea that kids that went to a lower level school and made it to the show would somehow be a fit in Boone ….. is another stretch . Maybe yes maybe no. If only………

That is all true. I just pointed out names that had been missed by big time programs and that was just draft picks. There are likely 400-500 a year at lower levels who are good enough to at least be a solid 1st or 2nd string player at App or most P5 and top G5 schools.

Some of those would have fit us but some would not have. Like you said about the pros they have way more resources and still miss. Hitting on 50% of your HS recruits is going to make you a good team and hitting 60-70%, or 50% hit being mostly all-star players, will make you a championship team. After the disastrous class of Drink that only saw really 4-5 good ones we will need to hit at 65-70% the next 2 years just to make the average around 50-55%.

I'm sure the goal is to capitalize on the facility and success and increase our hit rate. If you are hitting at a super high rate you will actually never sign over 19-20 players in a class.

First off we won’t be expanding our recruiting footprint much beyond what we already recruit not just because we don’t have the money for more travel, which we don’t (and also we only have a limited number of recruiting travel days allowed each year), but more importantly we don’t have the relationships built in other areas. It takes years to establish those and would require a fundamental shift in our territory. The only reason we’ve extended into some other areas recently (Midwest, Tidewater, etc) is because some of our recent coaching hires had recruited in those areas and had the all important relationships already established.

But there are some more basic issues that people need to keep in mind. There are literally thousands of kids to be evaluated each and every year. And there are only so many hours in the day to do so in addition to actual coaching and daily activities. We do a good job of sorting through all the tapes and figuring out how to begin the big board each season and we also use camps and visits to try and establish a list of potential recruits. But no matter how many kids we offer we can’t make them come to App. As much as we all love App some don’t share our warm, fuzzy feelings for Boone and surrounding. They have all sorts of options and all we can do is take our best shot. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

But honestly the most important point in all of this is how much time do we spend on each recruit. Coaches have to take a recruit’s “temperature” from the moment of first, in person contact. You see John Doe on film and really like what you see. Then in a normal year you either visit them directly or try to see them at a camp so you can introduce yourself and App. From the first “Hi, I’m Coach ##### from App State” you look for a reaction from them and that pretty much decides how much time you spend on any one recruit. Because with thousands of potentials out there each year you can’t afford to waste a lot of time on someone who shows no interest in App. You take the ones that at least show some interest and try to build a relationship from there. But every day you have to continue to judge interest and look for changes. And should that interest/communication wavier you have to decide how much time you keep pushing and when to move on. It’s a difficult job and one which I believe we do a pretty good job at as a staff.

Point being we can only spend so much time on each recruit. And it’s a fine line to decide how much time to commit to a kid who shows only modest interest in App verses a kid who shows real interest in App, regardless of their offer sheet. Only the coaches who are doing to day to day talking/texting can decide that.

Love this info. I figured KY and OH are just areas we recruit now because of connections so that backs that up. Just like we only got a kid from AZ and CA because of those current coach connections. We can't recruit those states every year unless we have a connection.

It is amazing to see some of the players showing us interest now when you consider we would not have even reached out to offer them 8 years ago. We are truly going after a higher caliber player.

Moose, question on this. Do you know of a lot of cases where we have had players who are mostly G5/FCS offers that have just blown us off and had no interest? Do you think we get many players in NC and SC who just blow us off and won't listen or take our call outside of a 5-star or top 100 player?

We should always try and get better players.
Always.
I'm counting we have some pretty good players now, we have a tough schedule this year, imo

Your list of players are based on current day. Sure, if we had the ability to foreshadow these guys development then what your saying would work. But it just isn’t practical. You list all these states that we need to hit to get eyes on kids, but who is going to pay for that? We aren’t swimming in money. You know that all those flights to and from California to lure DBG to Boone were paid for by donors. You know why? Because we didn’t have the money in the recruiting budget to afford it. The athletic department has to cover a sizable amount of scholarships because we can’t fully fund them through the Yosef Club, but you want to send our coaches all over the country kicking rocks over. You have Champagne taste on a PBR budget. That isn’t a recipe for success.
Damn that is wild that we had to fund those flights with donor money.

I hope they got their money back because they literally spent that money and got nothing in return for it. In essence they got duped and scammed by Drink. He knew he would not be here long enough to pay the piper on it. Drink really should pay those people back.

A coaching friend on his high school staff told me he was very lazy and that was one of a few reasons why people stayed away from him. DBG was just not a good fit at App.

The only change from our normal area geographically that I wish we could hit a little more is maybe Louisiana. I see real good players that ULL gets that I would imagine may come to App if we offered but that could very well be finances keeping that from happening.

South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama is where we should continue to focus outside of our home state.

Good if not great HS football in these states. All three states have only 2 P5 schools by my count. All three can be reached in less than 350 miles (6 hr.) drive. App State winning tradition, culture and facilities are better than other peer G5 schools in these states.
Join Yosef so we can go expand further into Virginia, Tennessee and all of Florida. Nuff Said.

Our core has definitely been what you have said but we are already heavily into Florida and Tennessee. We need more money to help us hit those states harder but I feel like we still get a lot of good ones from there. Evans is from FL as well as Lynch and many others we have gotten over the years.

Join Yosef just can't be said enough! We need to get a nice increase every year for sure. Money is our biggest hurdle by far.

Do our coaches get dealer courtesy cars to drive on recruiting trips?
