A couple things -- Ponce's system is extremely QB friendly. If they make the right reads, they will succeed in the system. They may not put up a lot of numbers, but they will.put up a lot of wins.

Having Huesman back is big. Not only because of competition, but because he spent several years in this system. He's going to see things Brice doesn't and explain it from a QB point of view.

I have been told by several that Huesman can step in and win a lot of games and win the conference. Brice's talent is next level and can take us to the next level IF (big IF) he gets the offense down. I trust Ponce to make sure Brice understands the offense before.putting it all on his shoulders.

Regarding Shuler and Tabscott. Shuler can make every throw in the book, but has struggled with the speed of the college game. Tabscott is the opposite. Mentally, he's ahead of Shuler but needs to work on the fundamentals to make all the throws. Both things are coachable.

Also, don't sleep on Andre Goodman. Likely to redshirt this year, but his work ethic is off the charts and his athleticism is high. Similar to Armanti in most schools were recruiting him as an athlete/DB -- we gave him the chance to compete at QB and he has.not disappointed so far.
100% agree. I am of the same opinion with Goodman. I’m also intrigued with PWO Reid. Big kid that seemed to fall through the cracks.
I'm Soo very excited because Ponce has a lot of talent at his disposal which should equate to very good things for our program.

Our depth at CB just took a "huge" hit. Got to develop some young talent really quick! Ouch!

Why is he no longer on the roster? I thought he and Jolly would be the starters at CB.

Yep, but the question is who is the next man up? There really isn't much depth back there and when you consider the attrition we've had at that position, I think it is a concern. It doesn't mean it won't be ironed out but I don't think you can just slough it off.

He was the first back up...Jones and Jolly are projected starters, I believe

True. We don’t have a great deal of game experience among the young guys but there is talent that can develop. Ellis and Wright were in line for two deep spots, but we have Small and Cone coming in and both have played the positions in game situations. I wish the Wright would have made this decision earlier in the spring to give guys like Smith some more reps. But it is what it is.

I was about to say that Wright would not be the starter. Jones is very good and overlooked, IMO. He will become a pro prospect once he plays a full season as a starter. I saw someone mention he will be like Kaiden Smith and I like that comparison. Smith got to start and became a prospect and Jones will be the same way. Steven Jones is a VERY good player and standout on special teams. People overlook him but he is an All-SBC candidate and NFL prospect talent for sure.

Remember there is a reason he was a backup and this hits us in depth. We have bodies but we need them to have experience and the incoming guys don't even have special teams experience. Depth and a couple more star players are the reason why we became ranked and finish in the top 30 every year now. When we lose depth we find ourselves 1-2 injuries away from depletion. The misses at TE bit us in the butt and we have missed a lot at CB. Could you imagine if just 3 CBs from the last 3 classes had actually panned out? We would be stacked and that is just about a 50% hit rate. I always cringe when we lose depth.

And keep in mind that we have not seen summer grades yet. There is always a chance that you lose someone from not making the grades in summer school. I hope our players are focused on their grades and don't find themselves in academic probation or suspended after the summer.

I get your point. You make that statement that our incoming guys don’t have special teams experience. Are you referring to the freshmen or the transfers? I look at it this way, Ellis has zero game reps at CB. Wright has a few, call it 50 for argument sake. So while they looked to provide some quality depth, it was still largely unproven. Small started at his previous school, Cone played as well. So to me, while it is a loss, it could be a net gain for this season, assuming both do not project at the same side. (Boundary, versus Field side). I’ll let the coaches figure things out through fall camp. They will get it straightened out either through recruiting or the portal.

Small has two years of eligibility if he wants to use them.

general question: has App ever had anyone who at some point was considered one of the top recruits in the country? I think 247 had him as the 14th best QB in the country coming out of high school.

I know high school rankings don't mean a whole lot, especially for him at this point in his career, just curious who are the highest ranked guys App has ever rostered, and is CB technically the highest.

Everyone is unproven til they play lol. Had many “unproven” guys who have shown out from day 1.

Also on the RB depth, not sure Daetrich is as sold as some on the outside about him not playing this year.

I know we are down to Staton and Glarmis since Ryker Casey transferred to UCF this Spring for Place Kicking duties. However, our new Freshman Place Kicker (Hughes) out of WV looks solid.

I don't just take experience as a loss. We have seen players who have no experience who come in and do well their first year. I remember Jason Hunter showing out his first year on campus, Corey Lynch, DJ Smith, Armanti Edwards, etc. I think Wright is a huge blow because he is really talented and someone we were going to depend on that is gone. I get the argument that they don't have much experience so it is not a big loss from previous years but he is a huge loss for the future. This is another highly touted player who Drink used resources on to go after that we likely don't get in a normal year. Drink's recruiting class is going to be about a 15% hit rate before all is said and done.

I am hopeful that Smith takes the two years. We will need it.

Your comment about high school or the portal should be just high school. I don't want to depend on the portal. I would treat the portal like JUCO where you plug a spot here or there. A good team won't become dependent on the portal. If you just hit on 50% out of high school you don't need the portal. Teams who are using the portal heavily are striking out completely or hitting about 15-25%, which is not good. I hope we never become that.

Wright, and Ellis were 2020 additions. Not on Drink.

We have a rather high attrition rate when it comes to these highly rated guys. Since joining FBS, take a look at the top 5 rated players that signed each year and look at how many finished. It is staggering to see how bad we miss with the “highly rated” guys. Wright leaving may turn out to be a blow, but it gives guys like Mike Smith an opportunity to shine. We shall see.
