The Breakdown - Southern

No video this week as I forgot the charger to help complete it. Here’s the script for those that have been watching this season.

Southern -

What’s going on Mountaineer fans?
Welcome to the breakdown where we take a look at App States upcoming opponent each and every week of the season.

First of all, happy thanksgiving. I hope everyone is enjoying their time with family and friends this week. It’s time for Georgia Southern to come to town. They come into the final weekend with a 3-8 overall record and 2-5 record in sunbelt play. They’ve had very few things to be proud of this season. They’ve been taken to the woodshed multiple times and lost a head coach. They are, for now, still a triple option team, however, they are throwing the ball more than any recent season in memory. Let’s take a look at how that’s working for them.

QB
We could end up seeing all 3 QB’s that they’ve used so far this season. Junior Justin Tomlin leads the team with almost 1,000 passing yards. He’s thrown only 2 td’s to 9 int’s. Cam Ransom and Connor Cigelske are both freshmen with Connor getting his first start last week against BYU. He may be the best passer of the bunch but his inexperience, and lack of trust in him to make the plays, showed last week. He’s the least mobile of the 3 options but I’d say he’s the most likely to start the game after last week and the other 2 not being fully cleared just yet.

RB Amare Jones has less than 200 yards on the ground this year but he may be the most complete player on the team. He’s also thrown a few passes (as he was a QB at Tulane before transferring in as a RB this year). He’s also the 3rd leading receiver on the team as well.

Logan Wright leads the team in rushing with over 750 yards on the year and 8 td’s. It’s easy to see why here. He’s got the size to go between the tackles and the speed to run by people as well.

Jalen White averages over 5.5 yards per carry and has 4 tds on the season.

We should all remember JD King as he’s had success against us in the past. He’s certainly less of a focus in this offense but can still be dangerous when given the chance.

Khaleb Hood is listed as a TE but is the leading receiver on the season with 479 yards but not a single TD.

Derwin Burgess Jr. is the only listed WR in the top 5 in receiving yards category. He has only 17 receptions and 1 TD on the year.

TE Beau Johnson only has 15 receptions but has turned those into 3 tds on the year. Expect to see him targeted near the Redzone.

NT CJ Wright is the leader on defense. He leads the team with 5.5 sacks. He also lined up at the end position, which he may actually be better at.

LB Justin Ellis is right behind Wright with 4.5 sacks on the year and a forced fumble.

LB Eldrick Robinson is the second leading tackler and leads the team with 2 ints.

NaJee Thompson is actually listed as a wideout but seems to have fully moved to the defensive side of the ball as he has 25 tackles and an int on the year.

Safety Anthony Wilson leads the team in tackles and passes defended. He plays the position well and most teams avoid throwing toward him often.

With everything we’ve just heard and seen, you can usually throw most of it out the window in this matchup. This game finally falls on the weekend it should have for many years. It’s a rivalry worthy of this weekend. A win doesn’t do anything of note for either team but this one has bigger meaning than just a W. It’s bragging rights and the hate that comes with it. App has to avoid a slow start and not let Southern control the clock. Defense should look their usual selves in this one but the offense will need to show more consistency. Having this as a tuneup for next week can provide a nice test but let’s not make it interesting! Keep the pedal to the floor and win this one comfortably.
