Maxwell Football Club Weekly College Football Update
By Rich Cirminiello

Highlights of notable Maxwell Award candidates for the week ending Dec. 4

Who’s Hot

QB Logan Bonner, Utah State
A year after going 1-5 and firing its coach, Utah State capped a remarkable turnaround season with its first Mountain West Conference championship. And the Aggies did it by slapping 46 points on a very good San Diego State D. Bonner, who followed head coach Blake Anderson from Arkansas State, threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns in the win. It was the first since the 2018 opener that the Aztecs allowed four TD passes in a game.

TE Brock Bowers, Georgia
Bowers already has the look of an NFL tight end… less than a year removed from Napa (Calif.) High School. He has great hands, seam-busting speed and a willingness to block, extremely rare for playmakers at the position. Bowers showed out in Georgia’s SEC Championship Game loss to Alabama, making 10 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown that tied the school’s single-season mark for TD receptions.

RB Jerome Ford, Cincinnati
Cincinnati dodged every bullet, avoided every landmine and defeated every foe in an AAC championship season that still has one massive chapter remaining later this month. The Bearcats snapped Houston’s 11-game winning streak Saturday behind a familiar recipe of defense and the running game. Ford, a former transfer from Alabama, sparked the latter with 187 yards and a pair of long touchdown runs on only 18 carries.

RB Sincere McCormick, UTSA
Western Kentucky scored plenty of points in two games with UTSA this season, but lost both, including Friday night in San Antonio. Behind the determined running of McCormick, the Roadrunners captured their first league title in their 11th year of existence, outlasting the Hilltoppers, 49-41. The north-south workhorse carried 36 times for 204 yards and three touchdowns, adding three catches for 35 yards. McCormick now has a program-best 15 rushing TDs in 2021 and a school-record 34 in his career.

QB Blake Shapen, Baylor
The Bears didn’t just upset Oklahoma State Saturday to win the Big 12 title. They did so with an inexperienced redshirt freshman under center versus the league’s top defense. Shapen faced constant pressure, yet calmly completed 23-of-28 for 180 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. In a most improbable turn of events, he was named MVP of the league championship game in just the second start of his career.

QB Bryce Young, Alabama
In the biggest game of his career… against the toughest D he’s ever faced… Young was unflappable in the SEC Championship Game. No. 9 is so good and so poised that it’s easy to forget this is his first season as a starter. Georgia’s top-ranked defense hadn’t yielded more than 17 points in a game this season. With Young at the controls, Alabama racked up 41 Saturday in Atlanta, while amassing 536 yards. Highlighting the sophomore’s MVP performance were 461 total yards and four touchdowns, three through the air.

The Maxwell Football Club also honors the nation’s best defensive player with the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Here’s a look at last week’s standout defenders.

Who’s Hot

S Erick Hallett, Pitt
Pitt held Wake Forest to its fewest points of the season to capture the school’s first-ever ACC crown. QB Kenny Pickett did his usual thing with his arm and legs, but Pat Narduzzi’s D was an even bigger story Saturday night in Charlotte. The big-play unit sacked Sam Hartman five times and picked off four of his throws. Hallett had two of those interceptions, while earning Pro Football Focus’ second highest cover grade among all championship weekend corners.

S DeMarcco Hellams, Alabama
QB Bryce Young and the entire Bama offense were the stars of the SEC title bout with Georgia. And rightfully so. But the Tide defense also played very well in Atlanta, particularly the safety tandem of Hellams and Jordan Battle. Hellams, who has had two of the best games of his career the last two weeks, was the highest rated safety last weekend, according to Pro Football Focus. He stood out in all phases, making a team-high nine tackles as well as an interception.

NT Apu Ika, Baylor
Although he doesn’t always make the play or show up in the highlight, Ika has fundamentally changed the Bear defense this fall, his first since transferring from LSU. At 6-4 and 350 pounds, his size and strength helped free up Baylor’s athletic back seven playmakers to roam with less engagement. In Saturday’s Big 12 Championship Game with Oklahoma State, Ika was in peak form. He was a central reason why the Cowboys averaged just 1.8 yards per carry, occupying multiple blockers while making four stops, 2.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack.

LB D’Marco Jackson, Appalachian State
It was not enough to overcome Louisiana in Lafayette, but Jackson played his heart out in Saturday’s Sun Belt title bout. And NFL scouts continue to take notice of his play and effort. The Mountaineers largely held the Cajuns in check, with Jackson roaming around the field for 11 tackles, 3.5 stops for loss, a sack and four hurries of QB Levi Lewis.

LB Devin Lloyd, Utah
It’s hard to beat a good team twice in the span of just a few weeks. Okay, not really. Just 13 days after crushing Oregon in Salt Lake City, 38-7, the Utes manhandled the Ducks again, 38-10, at a neutral site. Lloyd, once again, was a tone-setter, showing why he’ll be among the first defenders chosen in the 2022 NFL Draft. He had seven stops and an early 34-yard pick-six while earning the weekend’s highest linebacker grade from Pro Football Focus.

CB DJ Turner, Michigan
For the first time in almost two decades, Michigan stands atop the Big Ten Conference. And the Wolverines left no doubt Saturday night in Indianapolis, thrashing Iowa, 42-3. From front to back, Jim Harbaugh’s defense was airtight. On that back end, Hawkeye quarterbacks were unable to complete passes on Turner. He was targeted eight times, allowed two completions for four yards and was Pro Football Focus’ top-graded cornerback of championship weekend.
