Re: USFL Draft
I believe that about 40 years ago Jim Kelly started his pro career with the same team in the original USFL. Turned out ok

Re: USFL Draft
Hell yeah, we got ourselves a FIRST round draft pick! I don't care if it is the USFL, it is still the first round. Way to go Chase. Worst case scenario, he still gets to play football and get paid for it

Re: USFL Draft
Does this mean he had to commit to the USFL and thus won't be available for the NFL draft?

Re: USFL Draft
Based on the below, it seems like the team holds the rights to that player until a contract can be/can't be negotiated, so he technically could still be available. He just might not have a spot in the USFL if he waited due to the timing of USFL's first training day. USFL appears to deliberately target players that are late-round/free agency for the NFL to try to avoid the issue.

Re: USFL Draft
It also says in there that all players in the draft pool were under contract. I'm guessing that would mean they knew it could affect their NFL draft status. I'm also guessing that they were well advised on their NFL draft stock and made a decision based on that. The ones who play are still auditioning for the NFL and can be invited to camp.VNova wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 5:20 pmBased on the below, it seems like the team holds the rights to that player until a contract can be/can't be negotiated, so he technically could still be available. Re: USFL Draft
he hasn't signed a contract, so he is not bound to any agreement.
The USFL draft picks players they don't think will be drafted by the NFL. The decision belongs to Chase to sign the offer before the NFL draft.

Re: USFL Draft
I think this is Chase's best route to the league. He underperformed in the latest "all-star" game. He does, of course, have to earn the starting spot. If he does that and plays well he could be invited to an NFL camp.

He was one of the "winners" of the week there. The game didn't go great but it's never about the game.

Re: USFL Draft
Do pro scouts really put any stock in how a guy does in an All Star game in an empty stadium?

Re: USFL Draft
I think Chase has some talent but you have to remember the Shrine had better talent than the Hula, by far. He flashes against good talent but isn’t consistent and that’s why I think he should take this USFL shot to try and improve some more before going to NFL.

Re: USFL Draft
Practice holds more weight to scouts because of one on ones and no rule limits but the game still is something they watch. The media says he won the week but you have to be careful who you listen to. he was solid during the week but he didn’t raise his stock a lot. He held his own for sure but NFL teams were not as high on him as a few draftniks were.
Sadly, some agents pull their players out during the week because they think the game does not matter at all and that hurts these games. They don’t get any ads from the practices so they have to play a game.

Re: USFL Draft
Indeed! Scouts want to see who competes!
