I was reading about E. C. Duggins on wikipedia. He died young at 48. Was he let go due to health reasons, though there was a 5 year span from his leaving App State coaching duties and his death.

Hah, thanks. Back in 2008 there were barely any App State related articles..so I kind of went on a creation spree.

I have no answer for the query. Duggins and his boys were well before my time. Figured with the amount of olds on this forum someone would have chimed in by now.

I met his granddaughter at homecoming back in about 2004. We have not stayed in touch but I suspect there are surviving family members that are still enthusiastic supporters of APP football. Maybe one of them will check in here and respond.

This was well before my time, but I've managed to glean some info from friends who are alumni of the famed "Duggins' Boys." Coach Duggins headed the program from '47 to '50; then did an unusual tour of duty with the US Navy's Seventh Fleet special ops in Korea's East Sea/Sea of Japan. [This suggests that he was a veteran of WWII before taking the App job in '47, as were many of his players. It was not uncommon at all for men of his strong lineage to be called back into service in Korea if they had certain "specialties" honed against the Japanese in WWII. One can only imagine what he was called upon to do and what he saw in the Pacific theatre of operations.] He returned to App to coach from '52 to '55, then left coaching to serve as a professor at a college in Kentucky. His discipline was in sociology and psychology and he's said to have been highly regarded for his teaching.

Does anyone know a way to look up players who used to play at APP? A gentleman at my church, who passed away along time ago played for APP in the late 40s or early 50s, but I do not know the exact year. One thing I remember about him is that he had a place on the ridge of his nose that looked like a stair step. He had gotten cleated in the face what playing.

I don't have a game program in front of me, but I was thinking somewhere in the history section there was a list of all the players. Maybe it was a different sport than football, and maybe it was only award winners, but I was thinking it was a complete roster by last name.

It's entirely possible that he earned his doctorate after he was through chasing the Imperial Navy and the North Koreans around the Pacific. I haven't looked for an obit that would have more specifics. The facts are that two wars, a full-time teaching load, college football coaching and his life ending at such a relatively young age didn't leave him a lot of time for a personal life and higher academic pursuits.

Firemoose, Thank you!! I found him in 1950 and 51. He was one of Duggins boys. I am going to call his son and let him know that there are pictures of his Dad in his football uniform.

He was certainly well-rounded. I have to appreciate that. I am glad I have gotten to know more about him.
