Saw this on ESPN this morning. If we had not lost to Wyoming, do we make this list at 3-1 with our lone loss being to UNC?

If if and buts were candy and nuts, it'd be Christmas every day!
I thought the same thing.

Doubt it. JMU/Marshall aren't even on here. Probably would have to be 4-0 to make the list as it stands.

Liberty has a real shot to go undefeated. WKU looks to be the only decent team remaining on their schedule. How painful would that be if they made NY6 bowl?

For me no more painful than most G5 programs not named App State making that game.

Many CFB fans wanted an NIL system, reap what you sow.

Exactly. This writer does not seem to value the SBC properly either.

As for us someone posted this on 247:
Clark’s W or L against FBS teams better than .500
2020 2-3
2021 4-4
2022 1-4
2023 0-2

Total 7 wins and 13 losses against teams better than .500. Since November of 2021 he is 1-8 with that 1 win being the Troy Hail Mary. We will have to turn this trend around big time with the strength of the league to make any top G5 list.

This list seems to put a lot of stock in SP+ which has JMU, Marshall, Coastal, Troy, and GA State ahead of App. So, no. Even with the win over Wyoming I don't think App is on that list.
While I think App is much improved this year, they aren't back to top-tier G5 status yet. Maybe within the top 10-15 but not top 5.

We are definitely better but I would need to see us win the next 4 games before I would consider us in the top 10. The good news is we have plenty of chances to prove it this year but will have to reverse that record against teams over .500 to do so. If I had to pick 10 teams to put in a G5 Top 10 right now I would say Ga State, JMU, and Marshall from the SBC, Fresno and Wyoming from the MWC, Memphis and Tulane from the AAC, and Ohio and Toledo from the MAC.

Should we run our schedule, like we can - imo, I'd consider us top 5. Tough schedule though.

Georgia State is not a top 10 team yet. Their body of work so far does not demonstrate that ranking. They haven't played anyone. With their schedule, we would be or should be 4-0. ...and I would not put App as top 10 if we had not played anyone to this point.

Agreed with everything but the last line, you know we'd be pissed if excluded at 4-0. :D

I'm not sure where we'd be as of today, but we certainly would have been in a strong position moving forward.

I doubt they'd get the bid even at 13-0 with that schedule.

I may be wrong but I am pretty sure that App had the highest SP+ in the Sun Belt prior to the Wyoming game. All those schools passed us after the loss. I want to say we were in the 50-60ish range or something. If that were the case than we would have been in this top 5 bc it seems based purely on SP+. Again, I could be completely wrong this because I read way too much stuff about App and I could be mixing and matching different things in my head, but that is my recollection.

100%...just my internal thoughts that I would not express on YC😂😂. If we were 4-0 and played all YMCA teams, I would be touting we should be in playoff on YC 😂😂

JMU won't be on here even if they win every game as they are ineligible for the Sun Belt title and therefore can't earn the G5 NY6 bid.

Having said that, App has a stronger SOS than any of the listed programs so I could see them above any of the one loss teams, but there's also a few candidates that are missing such as Ga State, Marshall, UNLV. I suspect it's a combination of seeing what teams have done but also trying to project out the rest of the season. There may be a current assumption that the Sun Belt will beat each other up and the most likely strong candidate is going to be someone who runs away with one of the other conferences with fewer potentially serious contenders.
