Wonder if they have a top RB on our schedule that year.
This is a joke, and is probably overplayed, but still great.

Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
This should be the OOC model for us going forward. 1 regional FCS, 1 regional P5, and 2 regional G5. As long as we have 1 P5, I would even be fine with 2 FCS.
Wins matter more than good efforts in the playoff era for G5 (see Liberty).

It appears that way. As long as your conference is decent to fairly good there is no real need to beat 2 P5's.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:34 pmThis should be the OOC model for us going forward. 1 regional FCS, 1 regional P5, and 2 regional G5. Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
My thoughts are that I like having an easier opponent to begin the year so one can work out any first game issues. After that, I would take all P5s as opponents. I enjoy those games much more than other G5s with exception of EasyU. If we play all P5s and run the table...then we know we should have a decently good team.
There are G5s that are better than many P5s. However, I just like playing P5s and beating them given all the resources they have above and beyond us. I also think it helps in recruiting as recruits see who we play.
Also, having P5s coming to Boone does help with season ticket demand. Will be interesting to see demand for season tickets given no P5 coming to Boone in 2024.

Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
We need wins but with Liberty going the easy route we need to stand out so we can be ranked higher than them. I like what you laid out but I hope we never sign 2 FCS. I am okay with 1 FCS as long as we play a P5 because it is a guaranteed home game and not a heavy risk to lose while playing an attractive OOC opponent. I am hoping that 1 of the 2 G5 schools has a winning record. I would like to have some idea how good we are going to be before we get to conference play. I would be very happy with 2 P5 opponents if one comes to Boone.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:34 pmThis should be the OOC model for us going forward. 1 regional FCS, 1 regional P5, and 2 regional G5. Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
East Carolina is honestly like having a P5 opponent because it sparks a lot of interest. I would love to have a G5 come to Boone like East Carolina, Tulane, Liberty, Memphis, etc if we don't have a P5. People are showing up in general but the AD can charge more when there are high in demand single games and tie those games to season tickets.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:23 pmEasyU did..which is a kind of big deal to App fansAppinVA wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:21 pmNo P5s came in 2023.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 5:09 pmMy thoughts are that I like having an easier opponent to begin the year so one can work out any first game issues. A dream OOC schedule for me would be East Carolina, Wake Forest, a good regional FCS, and either someone like Liberty, Charlotte, a bottom tier P5, or a big name G5.

With two tough road games, ECU and NC State? My heart says 4-0; but brain (what's left of this 75 year old noggin) says opening 2-2.T-Dog wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 3:30 pmhttps://appstatesports.com/sports/2018/ ... dules.aspx

Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
After last year, I don't ever want 2 FCS teams on the schedule again. Hopefully, it'll be a very long time before we have another 6-6 season, but it sucks winning 6 games and still not being bowl eligible because only 1 FCS win counts toward that. And I know it's all about the playoff now, but I'd rather be in a bowl than be sitting at home if App isn't going to make the playoff.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2023 4:34 pmThis should be the OOC model for us going forward. 1 regional FCS, 1 regional P5, and 2 regional G5. Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
They put zero effort into watching Liberty all year or else they would know they are not the best G5 team available. Funny how their logic for the top 4 playoff spots doesn't apply for other spots in the rankings. Instead of finding a decent G5 school to follow this season maybe bringing some attention to a better team, the sports media was fixated on a JMU team who never was or would be eligible for NY6 bid.
If that's what it takes for App to get into the playoffs, then I'm all for easier OOC games going forward. A win over an ACC school that might not amount to anything as the season goes on carries equal weight as a win against a crappy C-USA team or FCS opponent in the bigger picture of things.
Probably still need the P5 games for the money at this point, and keeping them close where the expenses are lower is a good idea. Starting next season and seeing how the G5 school is determined for the playoff position, I would seriously consider a different approach if needed if I'm DG.
As for the opponent SC State, they'll bring a nice crowd, hopefully their band, and if their coach that year wants to burn his time outs at the end of a game already in hand, I'm not opposed to throwing it up to another 6'5" WR we have on the roster that year for a TD.

Re: South Carolina State to open 2026 football schedule
If they strictly used computer rankings who was the highest rated G5? Probably JMU despite that lone loss.
Just looked at about 3 different sites and all show JMU as the highest rated. Crazy that they ended up with a bowl game but apparently were not in the running for the NY6. Had they gotten that game would the coach and quarterback have stuck around?

The play off structure is likely to change over the years. My read. Play the best schedule you can and enjoy each game. Again , my opinion.

It's more fun for players to go and play the big boys. We will always have an outside shot at the playoff even going undefeated. Let's go play the SEC/Big 10 studs, make some money, knock off some giants and give the fans something exciting to watch.

If you want to be the man you have to beat the man. Ric Flair got it right, line 'em up. Not interested in an easy schedule just to get a non-deserved bowl.
