Joey in an ESPN+ article
https://www.espn.com/college-football/i ... e-football
GRADE TIER - A
Joey Aguilar, Appalachian State Mountaineers
Transferred from: Diablo Valley (California)
2023 stats: 3,757 passing yards, 33 TD passes, 10 interceptions, 249 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns
Midseason grade: N/A
Final analysis: One of the nation's most successful transfer quarterbacks in 2023 traveled across the country from Diablo Valley College, east of San Francisco, to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Aguilar started the final 12 games and set single-season team records for both passing yards and touchdown passes. He had multiple touchdown passes in 10 of 12 regular-season games, and he won Cure Bowl MVP honors with 211 passing yards and a rushing touchdown. Aguilar's accuracy fluctuated a bit, but he completed more than 69% of his passes five times, including against Troy in the Sun Belt championship game. After taking a few games to settle in as the starter, Aguilar was brilliant down the stretch in Sun Belt play, throwing 21 touchdown passes and only four interceptions in the final seven regular-season games.

Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
I'd love to know this whole story. Joey obviously has talent so was he completely overlooked by D1 schools? Did he have some academic issues? How exactly did we find him and how did he find us?

Could have been a late bloomer, or maybe he needed a coordinator that worked with his style. Maybe it’s mountain magic.

Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
I really didn't mean that to sound bad- guess it did. It happens and lots of kids get to college and straighten it out. My son said they share a class this semester. Joey is already a success story on the mountain. There is always some reason a good quarterback gets either overlooked or goes the route he took.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2024 9:40 amThrowing out.."did he have academic issues?" Geez

Frank found him and wanted him at Miami. Cristobol and Gattis said no so Frank called App and turned him that way.

I’d recommend listening to a first hand account from the man himself, as he was a guest on BGP:

so grateful that we get another year with him. He's all Mountaineer...believed in himself, believed in App St so much he came across the country with no guarantee he would start and now here he is. Can't wait till next season!

Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
Didn’t he graduate high school during COVID? I know that absolutely wrecked some kids that were borderline prospects when they couldn’t play a final year. Especially in Cali. Extreme examples on circumnavigating were kids moving to Georgia and their parents initiating a divorce.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2024 8:35 amI'd love to know this whole story. Wiki says his Juco career was 2021-2022, so did he not play in 22-23?

Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
Yep, saw that reality t.v show too. Jake Garcia and his fam left Cali to play in G.A. Totally weird times and many football kids got lost in the shuffle. Glad Joey landed here. He's an App kid!GSUwasGump’sFallbackSchool wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 6:40 amDidn’t he graduate high school during COVID? Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
Is there a correlation between size of high school, recruiting rankings and college offers? Kanye put up insane high school numbers at a relatively smaller school. He's not huge but seems to be an average size back. I think I'd read that maybe NC State offered to him?? I have no idea how that whole thing works with ratings and rankings but isn't most of it simply due to HUDL film produced by the schools?

Re: Joey in an ESPN+ article
It’s a good question and hard to say. Recruiting ratings for football are highly subjective and a good bit based on perception. It isn’t like basketball or baseball where you can see kids in direct competition to peers.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2024 9:22 amIs there a correlation between size of high school, recruiting rankings and college offers?
