Based on the tight lips around the program under DL, I bet we won't know who will start against Boise until around kick off. With that I thought I would revisit what we know about our QBs after 3 games.
#1- Swann- has generally played well but the red zone interceptions are game killers. It doesn't matter how well he can move the offense, if he can't get those red zone interceptions under control than he isn't a reliable guy for QB1. We don't really know anything about the injury and I expect that we won't know. Suffice it to say that if he can go, he is still QB1, but the seat has to be getting a little hot after his play last game.
#2- Kohl- the battle for QB1 lasted up until game week to open the season. Not sure what ultimately separated the 3 QBs but if Kohl pushed Swann that far then he must be able to play. Perhaps he is more of a gamer and if given the chance would shine. He too is currently hurt so time will tell if he is healthy for Boise. The backup QB is always the fan favorite and this is especially true after the starter throws 3 red zone interceptions. I would have liked to see what he could have done last weekend but alas the greatest "ability" is "availability".
#3- Gillon- the true freshman got rushed into playing time quicker than anyone expected and he looked like a true freshman. What surprised me most about his play was the fact that reports from camp indicated that he was right there in the fight for QB1 with Swann and Kohl. That is really hard for me to believe after watching him play in a real game. Nothing about his play sparks any confidence from those that watched the game. I was left with the question of whether or not he really is the third best in the room (ahead of Wiles and Wilson at the time) or the benefit of unknown coaching bias of liking their own guys better than the past coaches guys.
#4- Wiles- Transferred in to back up Joey last year hoping to get the reigns this year. That all falls apart in the winter and spring but he stays on the team and lands in the #4 spot. That had to be tough considering he was once a starter in the Sun Belt. He comes in for garbage time but looks good leading up to a final td drive. While I am sure he was playing against second or third string defense at the time, he certainly seemed to grasp the offense better than Gillon did. Not sure why we waited so long before bringing him in to see what he can do.
If Swan and Kohl are still injured, I would hope that Billy Wiles gets the start because I have no confidence in the offense being led by a true freshman on the smurf turf. We need our QBs healthy, but in the meantime a 5th year guy with prior starting experience seems like a no brainer to me.

Not sure we have the NIL to pull that one off. Studs like that don't come cheap.

Good analysis. I was at the SoMiss game. It seemed to me that the stuff that happened was 3 parts bad luck and 2 parts bad choices. Especially that interception/fumble (a interble??) where Dobinion caught it and it bounced up into the DBs hands. If Swann had theown it on Dobinions other side that would not have happened.

I'd like to see what Kohl could do. I feel like he was more of a run threat just because of his size. the greatest "ability" is "availability"...that may sum up our season unfortunately.
