Article on Scheduling

Unread post by JTApps1 » Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:53 am

Here is an interesting article from the W-S Journal about our efforts to build schedules for the future. Nothing earth shattering, but it does give insight to where we stand as of now. Hopefully Cobb will start these conversations with in-state schools. I'm getting anxious about our two openings for next year.

Great. Sounds like Cobb is still in love with UNCC. :x

"Cobb said Tuesday that Appalachian wants to get a game on the books but that the feeling might not be mutual. Athletics Director Judy Rose of UNC Charlotte was unavailable Tuesday."

Move on and wait until they come asking for a game. He makes App look desperate.

Sounded almost desperate. We damn sure don't need to beg UNCC for a game. Invest the effort in getting Wake for 2015.

I don't see it as desperate, just want to get something started. A 100 mile bus trip to our biggest alum base and NC recruiting area makes sense. Rose knows it is not wise for them to be playing us anytime soon. Unless she gets pressure from the same group that forced football it will not happen for awhile.

Yeah, I can understand how it could look desperate. But I can also see it as Charlie calling then to the mat, essentially saying: "You want to play with the big boys? Put your money where your mouth is!"

I agree, I don't think its desperation on Cobb's part, he is a business man and he realizes, unlike his counterpart in Charlotte, that a annual game with them would be extremely profitable, but there comes a time when Cobb has to realize that Charlotte doesn't want anything to do with us for atleast 3 years, and he should direct his efforts and attention to other schools, Wake, State, Clemson, ECU, Duke, maybe even Tennessee are out there, I gurantee that if we start playing annual series against some of these teams, and we do well, maybe even win a few, and we establish ourselves as a sold FBS program, Charlotte will change there attitudes and come running back to us.

I'm just surprised we haven't had conversations with any of the other schools in NC. ECU has an opening in 2014 and 2015 that would make a lot of sense. Clemson recently added games with two Sun Belt schools... I would love to go back to Death Valley.

Here is a quick list of teams within driving distance that need games for 2014:

Tenn, UNC, WVU, Auburn, Kentucky, ECU, MTSU, UAB

I'm sure we could find at least one game from this crowd.

And that won't happen. Their online community (AKA their delusional fanbase) thinks they will be scheduling BCS schools and inevitably moving to the AAC. After all, they have already passed us by and scheduling Appalachian is scheduling down, not up.

But I agree with appstate89, quit contacting the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and focus on schools that have established themselves. Schedule up, not down.

Exactly. Where did this fascination with scheduling UNCC come from? It's sickening. Nobody wants to play them anyway, but here's Cobb acting as if our football future depends on getting them on our schedule. Like I've said before, I didn't wait all these years to be FBS, only to get something started with UNCC.

I live in Charlotte and have no desire to play UNCC.
None what so ever.

We sure cannot get a decent FBS team into KBS as small as it is though.

I don't know where you get "desperate" out of it. This is a newspaper article where Charlie is responding to specific questions about scheduling local in-state games. Satterfield stated the long term approach in that it makes sense to have in-state series with any of the FBS programs in NC. Charlie was talking about specific needs for the 2014 season. Charlotte has an opening. Others don't.

I really think people try to read too much into these things. There is no love affair with Charlotte, but it does make sense to build that relationship. Yes, they are a start up, and I don't see them as being on our level yet, but they will develop and a future series makes sense (preferably when they have a track record).

Wake Forest has effectively stifled all discussion of a series for 12 years. It appears that option is now opening up as the ACC landscape changes. Anyone who thinks that App won't be pushing for that (if it's truly open) is just wrong. I remember that rivalry well, and I would think that all App fans want a revival of the Wake rivalry. It needs to happen, but we need to give a little time for schedules to open.

Charlotte is all we've heard about. Everything I read sounds as if we are begging. They don't want the game then fine, we need to stop groveling for it. We don't need to beg anyone for a game, especially a start-up that has never played a down of football. Yes, it would be a good series for both schools, but both have to want it.

All I am saying is that we should focus some of that wasted effort on Wake and other in-state schools.

I think we have a better chance of getting a home game with some lower profile SEC/ACC schoools than any of the BCS in state schools. I would contact Vandy, Ky, Ole Miss, Louisville, Miami, Syracuse, Ga Tech, Pitt, BC, Missouri.

It doesn't matter how many people we can get in to sit on possibly wet bank. SEC and ACC teams are not going to schedule us with the possibility that their fans would wind up sitting on a grass bank to watch a football game. They think more of themselves than that.

For two guys who generally want the same thing for Appalachian, we often appear to be miles apart in message board posts. Here's a case where I completely agree with you. High profile FBS teams aren't likely to agree to a contract for a game at KBS until we have addressed seating capacity. And as I have repeatedly said, we simply can't do that until our financial bond portfolio gets cleaned out a little more.

We remain heavily indebted for the "enhancements" we've been enjoying since 2006-07. Just paying the debt service on those existing bonds is no day in the park. We have to work through our growing pains for several years before we can stick our necks out again for more construction. I'm in a hurry, too, because I'm not getting any younger. But you and I have to face the facts. We've had no BB&T (WFU) or Jerry Richardson (UNCC) to step up with a 10 mil check to back the hiring of a stadium architect and the issue of bid requests to add 15,000 seats to KBS. All we can do is win games and promote-promote-promote to get more ASU folks on board. And wait for the day that university accountants can see some daylight.

Not criticizing, just making a statement because of what someone posted.

Love Appalachian. I know we do not have nearly as much money to work with as many schools.
Hope that changes one day. Imagine many of us have dreamed of winning the $400,000,000 lottery,
and giving a huge amount to App State as I have. Until that happens all we can do is to coddle people
that can give large amounts to do so, or hope we make enough to help make a difference.
