CSU Knew When We Were Passing

Unread post by GoApps70 » Sat Oct 05, 2013 5:38 am

Charleston Southern's coach, Jamey Chadwell, said at the 17 1/2 minute mark approximately that they knew when we were going to pass or run by the way we set up for the play.

I think they just guessed correctly. In the past, we've been able to run 6, 7 or more different plays or options out of the same formation. Either way, they beat us on our turf. That's got to change.

We need a big, confidence-building WIN in Chucktown today! All the pressure's on our coaches and players today.

I wondered the same way, hope you are right.
However, CSU's coach didn't seem to hesitate in any way
with that statement. No If's , And's or But's....so believe he was
telling it like it is. Believe they knew for sure.

Evidently we didn't choose to do so and passed every time instead. Not much to guess.

If this is the case its because our oline can't get the schemes right. Even if we are lined up in the same formation, the o line scheme will (or should change) based on the play we are running out of that formation.

Offense really wasn't this issue last week, we had over 400 yards with an 18 minute TOP.

There's nothing special about gaining 400 yards of offense anymore in college football. 400 is the new 200.

Defense has to force 3 and outs at critical moments.

I have to agree with Saint on this. The offense moved the ball just fine. Other than a few key conversions, they did their job. Obviously, they could have done better, but if they KNEW what we were going to do every time and still gave up 500 yards, maybe we should be so hard on the players.

I do think we were somewhat predictable, but I think that had more to do with the QB being reluctant to pull the ball down and take the run option. I am hoping that will be coached up.

I think we match up with The Citadel better than we did with CSU. Both teams are triple option with athletic QB's but CSU was much more of a passing threat. Call me a delusional homer (probably true) but I am looking for a great game with App coming out on top. Woody knows this team. The QB run on coverage situations will be our biggest struggle. It's been a struggle for years. I still think we take a step forward today.

GO APPS!!!

Agree they did little with the knowledge of what we were going to do. If D could have gotten off of the field we might have had > 600 yards.

Yes and no. Yards are nice, scoring is better. 1 or two trips that produced points should have gone along with the yardage. I really think we need to focus on our most mobile and instinctual QB and develop him and the rest of the offense and add plays as the unit gels.

No question that the defense was mobbed, and probably outpaces the offense for last week's loss, but the whole team has a lot of work to do.

Let me rephrase myself here.. I was not implying that the offense was the problem at all.

I was simply saying if we cannot run multiple plays from the same formation and our opponents know if it's a pass play based on the formation, that is a clear sign the offensive line can't get their schemes right. If we are in a formation that is a pass play, they will block a different gap/man than if it was a run play (out of the same formation).

There is something special about 450 yards if you only have the ball for 17+ minutes ---

Your 2nd statement is my point.

Your first statement is misguided. 400 yards in 18 minutes time of possession equates to 600 yards if we split 30/30 TOP.

24 points over 18 minutes equates to 36 points in a 30/30 TOP game.

4.9 yards per rush and 11.6 yards per pass attempted (16.8 per completion) wins you most games.

Again the offense wasn't the issue in the CSU game.

Defense wasn't the issue in the A&T game special teams and turnovers by a less 100% QB was.

Special teams and offense wasn't the issue in the CSU game.

If we get the A&T defense and the special teams and offense from the CSU game we can win a lot of games left on our schedule. I hope that starts today.

Penalties were our downfall against CSU. 5 face masking calls and at least an off-sides that gave a new set of downs when we had a stop! That is a big part of what kept the D on the field last Saturday. This is where our youth hurt us...not athleticism.

I'm not discounting the other issues that have been discussed, but without the penalties and mental lapses, we are 3-1. This is an area that CAN be corrected immediately. That's why I maintain that we cannot extrapolate the two painful losses to our future schedule. I think it CAN happen, and that's what I am going to expect until I'm proven wrong. That's the unabashed "homer" in me.

True our offense moved the ball well normally.
However was thinking of the fact that we didn't convert on 4th downs.
That killed us as much as all the defensive failures.
I believe we tried 4th and 1 twice someone said and we did not convert either one.
Not to mention 3d down.

Not sure I would have admitted that they knew when we were going to pass considering, outside of one time, they really couldn't stop it. Especially with how little our T.O.P. was. a more even T.O.P. and i doubt he would've admitted that

I love this thread !

We have all the answers !

Now, if the fans, the coaches, and the players can ALL get on the same page and put together a complete game over and over again, APP FOOTBALL will be back in place.

I agree with Saint, the future is bright....I love seeing the player interviews....these kids are smart and want to win.

I am going to support this team even more now....I BELIEVE we will back WINNING !!

Its time to back up the team, when things are down, they need our support.

I am a Mountaineer for the long haul.

GO APP !!!

Thanks for reading my gameday cheerleading ;-)
