Firing a coach after a single season would be disastrous.

No decent coach is going to want to come to a program that just fired a coach after a single season.

I appreciate the fact that The Sport Network covers the FCS and DII and DIII. I go there every now and then. However, I wonder how much this is about just getting hits and on-line ad revenue.

ANOTHER DISASTROUS SITUATION

Speaking of programs needing change, it seems time for Appalachian State to work out a mutual parting with first-year head coach Scott Satterfield.

After Saturday's 27-10 loss at Furman, the Mountaineers have an unfathomable 1-6 record. They are in the midst of their first four-game losing streak since 1993, which was when they last had a losing season (4-7). To avoid another one, they have to sweep their final five games.

Satterfield, spooked by the pressure surrounding this lost season, doesn't seem to be the coach who should be leading the program to the FBS level next year.

Just one guys opinion. But it does raise some eyebrows.

No big surprise. This guy was one of the "bash App for the JM situation" writers.

It is just sheer ignorance to blame or fame any coach for their first 2 years of results. Programs aren't built or torn down that quickly, although it is easier for one to fall than to rise. Any prior regime has some vestments in a program for AT LEAST 2 years afterwards because of the personnel that has been brought in, the coaches that were in place or not retained (due to budgeting in APPs case), and the direction the program was heading prior to a change. A new coach needs at least a couple of years to bring in HIS players and have HIS coaches in place to operate HIS system.

We all know that SS has been the head man for only 7 games, although results are not what any of us thought, he has a huge uphill battle getting the program turned around from the direction it has been sliding for several seasons to being competitive weekly in uncharted territory on the 85 scholarship level.

2014 signings will be crucial and tell much about where we are headed.

My personal opinion is that next season will be a tough one again, with marked improvement in 2015 and beyond.

Fans tend to think their programs should all have fairytale endings. Give SS his due chance to get it right.

My gosh, what would we be saying if our Hall of Fame prior coach stood at 1-6 this week???

KInd of like throwing your "Famed Coach" under the bus with no send off!

I'll give SS another year (which will be a tough one to prove something in), but ideally you have another coach in place before you fire the first one. Now I don't know if CC can think that far ahead or not, but that's how it should be done.

Exactly. For God's sake we're giving Jason Capel four years.

That is amazingly short sighted. Even if Satterfield does not work out as a head coach, it's way too early to tell.

He should be given at least as many years as his contract calls for. If he goes, not of his own volition, at the end of the season, then the one who hired him should go, too.

Unless he was desperate as hades. If he was that desperate, we don't want him.

Last week I posted a story about the experience U Mass is having with their move up. The "experts" in the NPR piece said that you have to wait 5 years to have a true picture of success or failure when a program makes the move from FCS to FBS. If we struggle again next year this will be only the first year at the next level. There's no way Scott will be fired this year or next over wins and losses.

I disagree, a good coach would look at this as a time of opportunity to turn a program around. I don't think a good coach would come in thinking he couldn't improve the record.

Still I'm for giving SS more time, I don't know if he has it in him or not yet.

When I was in hiring and firing, most interviewees wanted to know what happened to the person who previously held the position they were seeking. Of course, personnel policy prohibited me from replying.

Too, before a coach leaves his present job, relocates his family, puts his kids in different schools, etc., he is going to want to know if he is going to get the chance to prove himself or get the hatchet before he even gets his feet wet.

When the chalk goes up as a win, the players get the credit, when the chalk goes up as a loss, the coach gets the blame.
