For the final time, Appalachian will play a football game as a member of the Southern Conference. For the last time in the foreseeable future, the Mountaineers will lace it up against Western Carolina with a symbol of their mountain heritage on the line. On Saturday, Appalachian will recognize their favorite Chancellor who has put his heart and soul into this campus for over thirty years. The Mountaineers will play sixty more minutes of football and the divorce from the I-AA/FCS division will be final. For the first time in decades, the season is complete before Thanksgiving, and we have known it since March. Mountaineer fans have zero excuses for avoiding the cold weather this weekend. Next year, the conference logo on the field changes, and so will all of the opponents. This Saturday is last time you can guarantee seeing the Mountaineers and Catamounts battle it out for a jug that will likely not move for ten years or more. Appalachian will have three players gunning to break or extend school records. More importantly, fourteen seniors and three juniors are getting dressed in the black and gold for their final game having involuntarily sacrificed their vision of chasing a national championship. They deserve your support. We urge you all to show them how much they mean to you, one final time.

Apps got everything going their way in this game, senior day, large crowd (hopefully) greatly improved team play the last 4 games, and last SC/FCS game. Just cant see Western pulling off the upset, App 41 Western 17

I'm trying very hard not to say anything this week because if I see something that is not only from the school I love but also a piece of my family's history heading for that place then it will be very, very bad.

I always worry when I see so many folks predicting a blowout. While I hope folks are right, this is a much better Western team than we have faced in the past.

Firemoose's mother was one of my seventh grade teachers. I remember her bringing the jug to class one day and showing it to us, she painted the logos. I would really really really dislike seeing that jug leave the mountain!! With that said, I believe The Apps will retain it for years to come.

Not predicting a blowout, but I think we have turned the corner. I think Western is definitely better than the past few years, and they will be here to make us look bad. Get your mind right gentlemen, time to get physical and send them home with a complex...

It will be closer than we'd like it to be, but we should be able to over match them at two positions.

1 - WRs, they don't have the DBs to cover all four of our guys, looking for 11 and 15 to go out strong. Oline will need to perform however.

2 - Special teams, we have stronger kickoff and punt teams so we should be able to win the field position battle.

Hold on the ball and we should win. I too will be there until the end and will be in the stands early to send our seniors off to the best of my ability.

Who are the three juniors getting honored?

Also, I think that even though we've turned the corner (it seems), this one could be real close. It's bigger than their Super Bowl. I think it may come down to the wire, and we take the Jug home for good.

This game reminds me of the good old days of my youth, when, as a lad, I used to play the old man in rummy. Occasionally, I'd get on a roll and win like 19 out of 20 games. When he'd had enough, and was ready to quit, he'd say, "OK, THIS one is for the championship!"
We've owned these chumps for the past quarter century, and lead the series 58-18-1. Nothing that happens Saturday will reverse that kind of dominance, and there is no reason to put any extra undue pressure on ourselves. With that said, the boys should be prepared for anything; fake punts, flea-flickers, trick plays, etc... They are going to come in here with a manufactured swagger, intending to rattle our still shaky confidence by throwing everything at us except the kitchen sink. We've got to punch them in the mouth and impose our will early and often.
