W-S Journal article 10-7-14

A couple quotes from the article... Don't think I fully agree with his assessment...
“We come out fiery; I think maybe we over-hype ourselves a little bit before the game,” defensive end Ronald Blair said. “We’ve got to calm down a little bit.”
Blair said: “We’ll just go back to what we pride ourselves on, working hard and keeping each other accountable.… Our record might not look good, but in the locker room our spirits have been high because we play our butts off every week. We’re just not coming out with the results.”
This on I agree with...
“We’ve got to finish the season out strong,” quarterback Taylor Lamb said after Saturday’s loss. “We’re 1-4 right now. Every Saturday we’ve got a chance to win — that’s the way we’ve got to look at it. (We’ve got to treat it like) we’re 0-0 right now.

“Our next game is Liberty. We need to win that one and go from there.”

I don't know man, I think these kids are playing their asses off. This might be the team we have right now. Our move up was very poorly timed based on where we are as a program. I think we played our asses off last year as an 4-8 FCS team. We are down but not out. I really hope that the fans keep showing. It will get very easy for some to just stop coming when there is no freak show (AE) on the field and we are losing.

I have seen no reason to think these guys aren't playing their butts off - final score doesn't equate to effort (at least not every time) - the over-hyping doesn't limit itself to the start of the game - it can build up as the week progresses ---

I hope I'm wrong and I know I'll be labeled as a bad fan for not singing the sunshine song, but I don't think they will keep coming. The core will be there no matter what, but that is probably 8,000-12,000. For the rest of the people, it is entertainment. And when they are not entertained, they will spend those dollars elsewhere.

It would take multiple winless seasons for us to avg less than 15k.

There's more entertainment value on gameday than seeing a win. Boone is one of the most magical places in the State.

Hate to sound like someone else but rep for you and I actually ticked the button so you get the point. I agree Boone has a lot to offer and we should be okay unless we seriously take a long term dive.

Folks aren't going to like this but from what I've seen if this team calms down anymore someone's going to have to wake them up in the tunnel

I should have been more clear in my statement. I wasn't suggesting that our attendance would drop to to the 8,000-12,000 range, just that those are the hardcore group that will be there no matter what. The rest of the people that make up the 27,000+ we have been accustomed to are there for entertainment. What I was saying was that I don't believe we are going to continue to see those numbers.

I guess it's safe to assume by the player's statements that SS hasn't or is not in jeopardy of losing this team.

We will settle in around 20k with multiple 4-8 seasons. The attendance towards the end with bad weather and poor record will bring it down. 24k in the first 3 games and 16k in the last 3 games, 20k average.

got to understand we have been spiraling downward for the last 5 years, controversy, poor recruiting, losing popular assistant coaches, and replacing them with poor coaches, have all led from the flagship program in the FCS, to one of the worst programs in the FBS. I think its comindable that our attendance has stayed in the mid 20s' for this long, a lot of other fan bases would have abandoned their teams long before 5 years. But, its still tough to see empty seats, the rock is such a wonderful, and unique place to watch a game, I'm prejudice, but with the mountains surrounding it, and beauty of the leaves changing on the mountains, I believe its one of the prettiest stadiums to watch a game in America, the old lady deserves to have a standing room only crowd every home game.

We may have been spiraling downward for five years but at least we remained above .500 four out of five of those years. There is a silver lining to most any cloud.

Agree NewApp - spiraling is a bit of an overstatement --- I could live with "trending downhill" - of course, there is only one way to go after being #1 for so long :o how many SoCon Championships and playoff appearances in a row??? - Last year was bad, no argument here ---

That's not a silver lining. It's thinly veiled content wrapped in denial over the declining program.
