To Kick Rather Than To Receive
Yesterday we won the toss and opted to kick. Elon was up by 7 points before our offense reached the field. Why do we facilitate this? I say win the toss and take ball...every time!

what if there is a 20 mph wind blowing from one end zone to the other?CVAPP wrote:Yesterday we won the toss and opted to kick. Elon was up by 7 points before our offense reached the field. Why do we facilitate this? I say win the toss and take ball...every time!

Re: To Kick Rather Than To Receive
I have scientific evidence to back it up, but I've noticed over the years that high school and pro teams usually elect to take the opening kick, while college teams like to defer. For high schools, it makes sense. If you win the toss and say you want "to kick" you'll be kicking to start both halves.

I am not sure how weather related yesterday's decision was, but I know for certain Elon had no problem scoring a quick 7 despite battling the weather conditions we may have been opting to avoid

nope - just giving you a hypothetical - you did say - "everytime"CVAPP wrote:Yes, maybe if that is the reason. Are you suggesting that was yesterday's reason?

I did say "everytime". Now I am going to change it to "every time in what are perceived to be neutral weather conditions".

Giving the opposition the ball first gives them the opportunity to set the course of the game.To me it's more important to have the ball first, than after half-time.

Re: To Kick Rather Than To Receive
We deferred, not chose to kickoff. The difference being that by allowing Elon to choose to kick or receive, we pick which end to defend. Another reason for deferring is to seize momentum. If the deferring team scores just before the half, they will then retain the ball to start the 2nd half. This thought process potentially allows for a 14 point swing,

The way of the momentum and flow of the game was going, I was glad to be getting the ball to begin the second half.

Hindsight is always 20/20. BTW, if I recall correctly, we went 3 and out on our first possession in the 3rd.Black Saturday wrote:The way of the momentum and flow of the game was going, I was glad to be getting the ball to begin the second half.

Re: To Kick Rather Than To Receive
Sorry I wasn't clear but that was my foresight thought at the end of the first half. However, it didn't turn out like I had hoped. I actually thought we'd open the floodgates on them in the second half.CVAPP wrote:Hindsight is always 20/20. Re: To Kick Rather Than To Receive
My point being there's nothing wrong with opening the flood gates on an opponent from the get go. We gave Elon a chance to gain confidence. No need for that.Black Saturday wrote:Sorry I wasn't clear but that was my foresight thought at the end of the first half. However, it didn't turn out like I had hoped. Re: To Kick Rather Than To Receive
Just so I understand you correctly - You are saying App won the toss and "elected" to kick? - If that's what you are saying you are wrong - In that scenario then Elon would have had the choice to begin the 2nd half and they would not have chosen to kick off but to receive - I truly believe you are mistaken ---CVAPP wrote:Nope, not unless my ears are failing me.
