Getting a win over Elon is something Appalachian has been able to do in football since 1964, spanning seventeen games. Getting away from Elon and their built up frustration of continuing to lose to Appalachian has been tougher for the Mountaineers. It has been awhile since Appalachian has come away from an Elon game without some major injuries. In the past, it has been Armanti Edwards and DeAndre Presley who have fallen victim to Elon and their questionable tactics. Elon did their best last season to knock out Jamal Jackson, but he was not having any of that business. However, this week, Appalachian lost its starters at center and bandit linebacker for several weeks. For whatever reason, these acts have continued over multiple graduating classes and coaching staffs and perhaps it will be easiest for Appalachian to leave the Southern Conference than for Elon to discontinue their ways. So we can add Alex Acey and Deuce Robinson to the list that includes Doug Middleton, Rod Chisholm and others who have been lost for significant parts of the season. The focus now turns to a very game Samford squad who is looking to do the same thing that Elon has not done since it entered the conference: beat Appalachian in football. Samford has not been around as long, but have provided some interesting games in their short time in the SoCon. All four contests have been competitive into the second half, yet Appalachian has taken the victory in each game. The last two games have resulted in the same final score. This game is huge for both teams, as a loss would give either team their second conference loss and all but eliminate them from the conference title. Can Appalachian make it five straight wins over the Bulldogs?

If we come out as flat as we did against Elon then all bets are off but I'm hopeful we will come out ready to play. We've lost half our starters on D so far some here's hoping for a injury free game.

It will be a hard fought game with App pulling away in the end, as has been the case with our last two conference games.

I really liked how our defense has played on the road this season. Being on the road might be an advantage this week as there can be more focus and determination.

Not feeling confident about this game with our inconsistensies, injuries, and playing a team nicknamed the bulldogs. Put this together with an away game and an atmosphere that might be less than 5 on the decibel meter, I am just not feeling it. Anyway:

ASU has now won 3 straight games since the Citadel disaster. Impressive performances against Chattanooga and Coastal were followed by a shaky game against Elon. The good news last week is ASU made plays when they had to and secured another win. The bad news is that concern regarding the defense re-surfaced. Samford has played a soft overall schedule to date. Regardless, we still need to respect their 5-1 record. With Wofford on the horizon, a travel date to Samford has the makings of a trap game. Hopefully, ASU got the "game they should have won but lost" out of their system against Citadel. Samford seems improved but I still expect the Apps to "out-athlete" the Bulldogs to win a hard-fought game.
Some keys to the game:
- Can ASU establish a ground game to compliment its passing attack?
- Will ASU control the Samford pass rush by its defensive ends against our young tackles and thus, allow Jackson time to throw?
- Will ASU's young defensive line neutralize the Samford running game and thus make the Bulldogs one-dimensional.
Prediction:

Samford & Son 23
