Damn, 3 strikeouts (with a walk between 1 and 2) to end the game. I hate to put blame on a coach but we should not have lost this game. When your pitcher has thrown 4 perfect innings and then gives up a HR followed by 2 other hard hit balls, it is time for a change. We just continually leave in pitchers for too long and once again it cost us.

How long does it generally take reliever to get loose? Chirico was cruising so you don’t have anyone up in the pen to start the 5th. I tend to agree that you want to have a guy ready if the wheels start to fall off but there wasn’t any indication that the inning would go south and in such a hurry.

We had our chances. Not often that our offense lets us down, but it did today. Time to see how tough we are!

As soon as they went solo jack, single single 4-2 we should have had someone warming up. Especially if we wanted Chirico to be ready if we need him again in 2-3 days. Now he’s burned and he got rocked that inning, double damage.

We didn’t warm anyone up until it was 5-4 Troy.

There may not have been any indication at the start of the inning, but it sure didn't take long before there was. AT 58 pitches, he had given up 2 and bases were loaded with no outs. That just screams for a pitching change. Not sure how many more pitches he threw before we pulled him (had to leave the screen and do some actual work), but it was too many.

Troy had one guy get two hits, and five get one hit. Everyone that got just one hit got it in one inning. Pitching was as good as you could ask for before and after. Hitting when it mattered was non-existent outside of Boyd.
When will "It's better than what we had" no longer be good enough for App State?

Agree with that timing. My question is would they have been ready in time to stop the carnage? It just seemed to snowball fast.

Hindsight is always 20/20. I don't envy any of the coaches having to make game time decisions while having us keyboard coaches judging their every move. I can barely decide what I want to eat for supper tonight. There is a reason that none of us are D1 baseball coaches.

30 has gotten out of jams in the past...one last weekend I believe.
He was cruising. If he gets out of it, Coaches know their player...great move.
The latter, keyboard coaches...what was he thinking?

Sure, but outside of an injury where a reliever gets all the time needed, to bring someone e in takes time and forethought. By the point that it becomes obvious that you need to get someone up, the damage is done before the reliever is ready. It’s a slippery slope.

Had to win today.

Coastal will be on their 3rd game in 3 days, and have somehow secured a regional birth (RPI is stupid). USM will have less rest than us.

We've got 33 on the mound with a non-all-conference chip on his shoulder.

Advantage Yosef

The Coastal glazing is unreal. Steensma will cool them off.

Looking back , yeah we aren’t likely going to beat a decent team when score five. We had eight innings of good pitching and one really bad inning. Troy probably is the better team but we could have taken this one. Win or go home now.

That umpire sucked, very inconsistent. There were some close pitches that went each way, but the 2 worst in the game was the ankle/shin high strikeout of Zamora and then the left handed batter's box strikeout of Boyd. Hope not to see him again.

I can tell you from personal experience, in my mind the toughest decision for a coach is when to change pitchers - sure, sometimes it's obvious but that's not usually the case - UNLESS you have Mariano Rivera, John Smoltz, Billy Wagner or Dennis Eckersley down in the pen. However you really just need a pitcher or two that is consistent, one you can count on in tough situations and honestly I haven't seen anything close to that from the APP bullpen this year.
