Wild thought. But what if we are actually better next year.

extremely well put. Let this be a reminder to celebrate those players that decide to withdraw their name and come back instead of looking at them negatively for testing the watersAppDawg wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:02 pmRaleighApp27609 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:22 pmAnyone know if this craziness with the portal this off-season is endemic for all mid-majors (not just the Sun Belt)? That is a very wild thought at the moment. If Kerns can win 30 games and the conference championship, build a statue and lifetime contract. He would get a major P5 job after he lost 90% of points, steals, rebounds, assists and won 30 games after doing so. Surprised he hasn’t got one yet or nothing has leaked yet. He deserved that this year.

What are the chances Kerns is back? Y'all can't think this exodus would happen if he were staying.

And in business you negotiate those contracts. The scholarship is currently a one year deal, that can be on the table. If players want to make this a business decision let’s treat them like businessmen and women.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 7:43 pmUnderstand the sentiment but here is the rub with contracts. Can you terminate a contract for a player that isn’t progressing into the player that we hoped he would? Let’s use Mantis for an example. He was limited offensively and a detriment on defense. Would he be worthy of being kept on contract? How do part ways? It seems like any solution has a counter that makes the solution difficult.

Pitino is saying he wishes he could have signed players to contracts while at Iona while wearing St. Johns gear, a job he took despite having a contract with Iona.AppDawg wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:02 pmRaleighApp27609 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 5:22 pmAnyone know if this craziness with the portal this off-season is endemic for all mid-majors (not just the Sun Belt)? I have zero sympathy for coaches whining about the portal. Fans? Yes.

Everything going on is pushing us towards players becoming employees. I hate that thought, but it might be the only way to protect the schools in some form. Once again the fans are the ones paying the price.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:30 pmAnd in business you negotiate those contracts. I don’t know. Contracts would help with keeping talent I suppose. I just think that they could also create a situation where you have to keep dead weight. So let’s say you sign a guy to a three year deal for $30k a year in scholarship and he isn’t working out. Do you have to let him go and pay him the $30k?Saint3333 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:30 pmAnd in business you negotiate those contracts. Put the person aside, what he experienced in the MAC all the good players in the conference being poached, is exactly what we are currently watching happen to us.T-Dog wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:31 pmPitino is saying he wishes he could have signed players to contracts while at Iona while wearing St. At some point the chickens will come home to roost. Put me in the camp of significantly souring on the “revenue sports” of college athletics.
Perhaps there is a reason women’s athletics (basketball and softball) are peaking — might it be sport in its purest form?

Seems like it’s happening in football, maybe not at App. With the portal, this is definitely a thing. You don’t perform, you’re asked to leave.

That’s how business works, some will get one year deals, some will get four. There would be buyouts including in those contracts. Some will be great deals, some won’t.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 8:44 pmI don’t know. Contracts would help with keeping talent I suppose. We can’t get mad at Assets (and that’s what they have become) when they leave after a year if we aren’t willing to sign them to longer term deals. That is direction this is headed to gain some sense of regulation.
The lower level power schools will drive the policy after they continually receive the short end of these.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I’m not Twitter or X. Have any of our basketball players posted the “I love App, thanks family, friends and fans for your support. I am entering the portal” post? I haven’t seen it reposted if they have, but all our football players do that.
The reason I ask, is that when football players post it, it feels final that they are not returning once going to the portal. If these guys aren’t posting this, it’s one of two things: 1. They are inconsiderate or 2. They don’t view it as a final decision.

If you take out Abson/Brown that’s probably where we’re at.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Ultimately the FT shooting is what sunk our season according to some. Kerns could not take it another year so he cut the whole team. He's been searching the net to find guys who can consistently shoot 90%. The approach will be to run and gun and get to the line 40 times a game- 36 makes will be what we need with the new and improved roster and we will get an at large bid with our 30-1 record.

Man Xavion was my favorite player I didn’t expect him even if Kerns left. Maybe he wants to be closer to home.
Kerns has to be gone. Nothing else makes sense
