ASU @ Wofford Game Thread
Game is about to tip off here in Spartanburg. Great seats right behind the App bench. Kind of sparse crowd but not bad for a weeknight.
Let's go App!

11-10 Apps, just under 13 in the first half. Back and forth game so far, we are hanging tough.

Halftime: 26-25 Apps
Been a very evenly matched game, don't believe either team has led by more than 3. Looks like this one could go down to the wire.
Obacha is really fighting down low and Tevin Baskin is having another strong performance off the bench.
Let's hope we can keep it together, it would be great to steal one on the road and get back to .500 in the SoCon.

They are looking good! Capel is preaching to the team about not settling for jump shots. When they've driven to the bucket, good things have happened. Just need to stop the ill advised shots, keep playing strong defense and we could get this one.HeffnerIV wrote:They look good from the computer. How about in person?

9-point lead has shrunk to 1, 38-37 Apps with 11:00 to go. Really gone cold on offense and have been getting called for a lot of fouls. 5 team fouls to 1 at this point.

Up 7.
Put the kids to bed.
Come back down 5 with 6 to go.
Shooting is terrible.

Hamilton to the line with 0.8 to play, 50-49 App. Wofford somehow got 5 fouls in 4 seconds after being called for 2 the entire half.

According to the live stats, Wofford last scored with 6:57 to go. Way to go Apps, it is good to win on the road.

Neither team could really hit any shots at all when it counted. Both teams lost their largest leads in a matter of minutes. Both squads are very young. Good stolen win on the road.

Re: ASU @ Wofford Game Thread
Just got home from Spartanburg and my heart rate has resumed to a normal pace. A few observations:
-Official attendance was 1,176. Not bad for a weeknight considering the student body size. The student section got into it late and Wofford really fed off that when they made their second half comeback.
-Michael Obacha had some more foul trouble tonight as he got 4 personals but was able to stay on the floor for 20 minutes, splitting time with Tevin Baskin who played 21 minutes. With Jamaal Trice under the weather, Capel pretty much went with a 6-man rotation as the other four starters all played at least 34 minutes.
-I was very impressed with the team's poise. We went from leading by 9 to trailing by 7 in a span of about 8 minutes and the guys never hung their heads. They really clamped down defensively, chipped away at the lead and got a nice road win. Ugly as sin but I'll take it.
-As is the nature of the beast on the road, we sure didn't get any help from the zebras. With 40 seconds to go, ASU had 8 team fouls to only 2 for Wofford. However, it actually worked in our favor as they had to foul us 5 times to send us to the line, leaving them only 0.8 seconds for a 3/4 court heave. With about 3:00 to go, I was red in the face yelling at the refs and got some funny/appreciative looks from the App bench.
-Was the closest I've been to the floor during Capel's tenure and somewhat surprisingly, I really liked what I heard from him. Encouraging the guys after a good defensive stop or hustle play and very active from working the refs, barking out plays and staying on the kids to not settle for early shots. Much more passionate than he comes off in interviews.
-It could just be the difference in seeing it up close and personal but the team as a whole seemed to have more confidence than I've seen in a while. They looked like they expected to win and weren't surprised with the outcome. Wofford has been scuffling so I won't read too much into it but I'm glad to see the improvement finally translate into some wins.
-Lastly, the students were getting on us a good bit after Wofford took that 7-point lead with about 8:00 to go, heard some heckles directed at Okam about the free throw, even though he never entered the game. Nothing in poor taste but it was nice to walk out of there, Apped out from head to toe, through the silent section of boat shoes and khakis.
Had a great view of the action, not a bad way to entertain yourself for $12 on a Tuesday night:

Re: ASU @ Wofford Game Thread
Nice write-up, Big C. Didn't realize we were perfect against the spread this year. Also, Healy's count of 3 blocks was more accurate than the official scoring of 1. Hell, I remember one possession where he blocked 2 shots.bigCasu wrote:Neither team could really hit any shots at all when it counted. Both teams lost their largest leads in a matter of minutes. A very nice road win. Also encouraging to hear the positive review for Capel. Maybe there is life in this team afterall.

Re: ASU @ Wofford Game Thread
Earlier in the week we get their DC, and last night we obtained the win on the court. Now if we could only figure out how to steal their old gold and replace that damn yeller stuff we'd be in business.
