Harcum was MIP last season , my opinion .Has a higher ceiling .X on ball defense and rebounding are next level .Yes , I know he isn't a shooter - if he was he would be at UCLA.Tate is the wildcard .If he can bring it , look out.

Over the years many teams which have been successful have had a defensive stopper who couldn't shoot and wasn't counted on for points

Southern Miss landed former 4 star Illinois / St. John's guard Andre Curbelo

The kind of addition we need

Seems like Southern Miss basketball has more NIL money than our entire athletics department has...

Glancing across the Sun Belt in terms of key transfer additions:

Arkansas State:
Freddy Hicks (Tarleton St) - 16.2 ppg 6 rpg All WAC selection
Derrian Ford (Arkansas) - Former 4 star 100 recruit.
LaQuill Hardnett (Buffalo) - 11 ppg 7 rpg last yr for Buffalo
Dyondre Dominguez (UMASS) - Former 3 star recruit, 9 ppg 4 rpg last yr @ UMASS
Taryn Todd (JuCo) - Former 3 star TCU recruit. Candaian guard
Obadiah Curtis (JuCo) - 19 ppg 8 rpg last yr in JuCo
Lado Laku (JuCo) - 6'10 big man, 5 ppg 4 rpg last year

Arky St might be a sneaky SBC contender with these additions.

Coastal Carolina:
Brayon Freeman (Rhode Island) - 14 ppg 3 apg 3 rpg last yr for Rhode Island, former 3 star top 200 recruit
Kevin Easley Jr. (Duquesne) - Former 3 star recruit and SOCON Freshman of the year. 11 ppg 7 rpg in 2021 for Duq.
Ian Granja (Memphis) - Member of the Spain U20 national team

Coastal still has a few schollys to fill from what it looks like, Freeman has immediate All Sun Belt potential.

Georgia State:
Toneari Lane (Winthrop) - 10 ppg 38% 3P shooter last year for WU.
Josh Taylor (ETSU) - former 3 star UGA transfer. 7 ppg 5 rpg last year for ETSU
Lucas Taylor (Wake Forest) - Former 3 star top 200 recruit
Rickey Bradley, Jr (VMI) - 9 ppg 5 rpg 2 apg 39% 3P as true freshman @ VMI
Jay'Den Turner (Queens) - 8 ppg 8 rpg for Queens as a senior.
Leslie Nkereuwem (Longwood) - 4 year rotation big man for Longwood

no big splash here, but tons of quality veterans and experience here.

Georgia Southern:
Deuce Dean (Hampton) - 1.1k career points at Hampton, 13 ppg 4.5 apg 3 rpg last year
Eugene Brown III (Ohio State) - Former 4 star top 150 recruit.
Malik Tidwell (D2) - 21 ppg 3.5 rpg 3 apg last year in D2
Jamar Franklin (South Alabama) - 4.6 ppg 36% 3P shooter last year for USA

Deon and Brown are big time pick ups for our level, Tidwell could be very good too (see Isaiah Moore for USA from last season).

Louisana:
Blake Butler (JuCo) - 20 ppg 6 rpg 2 apg, top 25 JuCo Recruit in 2023
Hosana Kitenge (JuCo) - big man that started career at coastal. 12/8/3 last season

Louisiana didn't really capitilize on their tourney appearance it looks like, but Butler could likely be an immediate contributor and all conference kind of guy

Southern Miss:
Andre Curbelo (St. Johns) - former 4 star top 75 recruit. Big Ten freshman of the year at Illinois. 10 ppg 5 apg last year
Victor Iwuakor (UNLV) - former 4 start top 150 recruit. 3 ppg 3 rpg in career off bench for Oklahom & UNLV
Nick Krass (Oregon State) - Former Ole Miss comitt, did not play many minutes for Oregon St last year
Bryson Hall (JuCo) - 6'8 big man, 3 ppg 3 rpg last year

Curbelo and Iwuakor are home run additions to Southern Miss who returns former 4 star / Ole Miss transfer Austin Crowley. They're gonna be dangerous again if Curbelo gets a waiver to play this year (technically has to sit a year since he already used his "free" transfer)

Troy:
Tayton Conerway (JuCo) - 14 ppg 4.3 rpg 2.1 apg in 3 years at JuCo level
Theo Seng (JuCo) - 16.6 ppg 8.6 rpg 37% 3P last year at Eastern Arizona JuCo
Marcus Rigsby, Jr. (JuCo) - 15.4 ppg 3 rpg 2.2 apg last year at Tyler (JuCo)
Randarius Jones (JuCo) - 7.1 ppg 5.4 rpg last season

Troy looked to go after exclusively JuCo transfers this cycle, many of these guys performed at a high level in JuCo. JuCo's have traditionally panned out well in the conference

South Alabama:
Maxwell Land (St. Francis PA) - 12.8 ppg 5.4 rpg 36% 3P All NEC selection, All NEC freshman team selection
Thomas Howell (ULM) - 9.5 ppg 8 rpg 2.1 apg last season for ULM, 66 career starts
Samuel Tabe (D2) - 16.4 ppg 8.2 rpg last year, 55 career starts at D2 level
Isiah Gaiter (D2) - 16.3 ppg 7.6 rpg 3.7 apg 38% 3P last year, 62 career starts at D2 level

4 really good additions for USA, after their success with D2 transfers last year they look to continue that again. All 4 of these guys are capable of starting in the conference

Marshall:
Kevon Voyles (UMES) - 12.9 ppg 2.9 rpg 2 spg 33% 3P last year for UMES, 45 starts in 3 seasons
Nate Martin (Texas State) - 8 ppg 4.8 rpg started 47 games in 3 seasons for TxSt.
Cam Crawford (Indiana State) - 3.1 ppg 2 rpg as a freshman, did not play this past season

Marshall has been hurt bad by portal losses this off season, but these additions help alleviate some of that pain. 2 guys that are guranteed to contribute immediately

Texas State:
Chris Nix (UT-Martin) - 6.5 ppg 6 rpg 77 career starts in 4 years
Coleton Benson (Army) - 11.6 ppg 2.5 rpg 1.6 apg 37% 3P as true freshman for Army
Dontae Horne (JuCo) - 13.5 ppg 4.7 rpg 4.5 apg 2.5 spg 35% 3P in 3 years at JuCo level
Christian Turner (Troy) - 5.4 ppg 3.5 rpg in 24 starts for Troy last season
Elijah Tate (JuCo) - JuCo/UAB transfer. 8.4 ppg 2.9 rpg last year in JuCo

No big splashes, but Benson might be a sneaky great addition. Quality experience added overall

James Madison:
Michael Green III (Robert Morris) - 1.2k career pts, 10.7 ppg 3.6 rpg 1 spg in career (76 starts)
Quincy Allen (Colorado) - Former 4 start top 100 recruit
T.J. Bickerstaff (Boston College) - Former 3 star BC/Drexel transfer. 6.3 ppg 5.3 rpg in 62 career starts
Bryant Randleman (High Point) - 9 ppg 3 rpg 3.4 apg 1.3 spg 4 year starter for HPU
Raekwon Horton (C of Charleston) - 5.4 ppg 3.3 rpg 1.1 apg last season for tourney team CofC

Might be the best overall transfer class. Basically a starting 5 of quality additions, 2 high major transfers, two low major stars/starters, and a role player from last seasons top mid major team

Old Dominion:
Tyrone Williams (Oregon) - Former 3 star Top 5 JuCo recruit in country. 27.8 ppg 7.5 rpg 3.2 apg 2 spg 36% 3P. in JuCo, ELITE addition for ODU
R.J. Blakney (Dayton) - 6 ppg 3 rpg 59 starts in 3 years at Dayton
Sam Hood (JuCo) - 10 ppg 4.6 rpg last season for JuCo Brunswick CC.
Devin Ceaser (Buffalo) - 5 ppg in 6 mpg as freshman for Buffalo

Tyrone Williams might be the best transfer addition in the conference, PAC 12 was probably too high of a level for him...watch out sun belt.

Louisiana Monroe:
Patrick McCraney (JuCo) - 21.1 ppg 6.1 rpg 3.2 apg 1.3 spg as freshman last yr
Tyreese Watson (JuCo) - 19.6 ppg 3.7 rpg 2.9 apg 1.6 spg 37% 3P at juco level
Makai Willis (Fairfield) - 2.5 ppg 2.4 rpg off bench for Fairfield
Jerry Ngopot (St. Peters) - was on roster for cinderella St Peters squad

ULM has historically been a JuCo heavy roster, and once again their best transfer additions this year some JuCo guys. Not a glamorous class, but there is nothing glamorous about Monroe, Louisiana

App State:
Myles Tate (Butler) - Former 3 star Top 175 recruit. 2.6 ppg last year for Butler
Tre'Von Spillers (JuCo) - 13 ppg 11 rpg 5 bpg at JuCo level

This is a vacuum comparison as these are only transfer additions for each team. This doesn't include transfer losses, rising freshmen, and roster retention. But overall I'd say we are bottom 3 in the conference in terms of transfer portal additions. As a team that was 13-16 against D1 competition last year and has brought in 4 true freshmen this almost feels more like a rebuilding / transitional season coming up for us than a year contending in the conference

But….we have potential for an elite defense compared to these teams, including 2 elite shot blockers/rim protectors in Abson and Spillers. Too many variables at play to base potential success on transfer portal alone.

Too many variables at play to base potential success on transfer portal alone.
of course, hence why I mentioned this was a vacuum comparison. But our biggest issue last season was offense, and through the portal we have not truly addressed it. Maybe the assistant coach we hired is an offensive mind coming to help revamp things. Maybe 1-2 of the freshmen we have coming in are able to immediately contribute like Abson did as a freshman. But just from what we know from the outside, a .500 team has not done much with the roster to address the problems from a year ago

and what good is blocking 10 shots a game and playing great defense, when we struggle to score 60 points and are the worst free throw shooting team in the conference

Maybe we hold teams to 58 per game. Seriously though, hopefully the veteran returners will produce more offensively. Harcum and Mantis showed lots of development between year one and year two. If they stay on that trajectory along with Gregory and Huntley’s potential, with decent contributions from a few more newcomers, we could be good. Although the offensive scheme might need revamping as well.

FWIW Tanner Smith coordinated the defense at SFA, among other things. Although I think one of his most important attributes is that he’s from the Atlanta area and has ties there to help fill that ATL recruiting void left by Moynihan.

I wouldn't be upset if we saw 100% new schemes offensively

Think we’ve been after him for a long time. Was at the same school that we got Donovan from for a while. Big college ready body.

In what way? We’ve got 2 commits. Are we full for 2024 class? Only guy that is out of eligibility might be Donovan Gregory after this season. Sit and wait and attack portal if needed.

I personally like what coach Kerns has done and I am excited for this upcoming basketball season! Should be a fun year in Boone.

Myles Tate out of Dorman High School is a super nice kid and a solid player. Didn’t quite get it done at Butler but I believe he will be a contributor on the court and off of it.
