To only be down 9 when OS shoots 60% from 3, and hits 10, I’d say we still have a chance. If they hit 10 more, god bless ‘em

Guards have to step up this year or it’ll be a long season: Tate, Harcum, Brown.
We will miss Boykin at the FT stripe.

Solid effort, hopefully will be competitive in the belt but a little worrisome with only have an 8 man rotation.

Re: Oregon State 10:00 pm TIP
Will be interesting to see where we are on Jan 1 - early games involve a lot of travel, not sure why we are out in Oregon -
I assume its one of those games for the team to "enjoy the travel destination?" Kerns seems to like to play in the 60 point range, which is not sexy for a fan base. I would love to see some up and down action. Playing in the 60 point range, good shooting % and especially free throws is paramount. Not sure why the teams Kerns has had here are not great at FT % - its frustrating for sure. Need some wins to get the fans to show up for sure, but with a defense oriented team, and mor L's than W's people aren't going to want to come watch slow defensive basketball. We have 6 players that start and or that get good minutes and were all here last year, so this is not really a "new team that needs to gel" But again lets get back home and get some comfort under our legs.
Will continue to see where we are at Jan 1 - I like that Kerns has the program in good shape, is engaging with fan base, has the media looking at us - the trajectory seems up and seems positive getting out of such a large hole for the program. Getting the NCAA bid a few years back set Kerns up for exciting the fan base, and so many things, but maybe gave us higher expectations than are to be realized? We all want to see App bball come back to life. The pre-season selection, again is helpful for coverage, but we really need a 20-25 win season and above .500 conference or the pre-season hype will not carry over into next year. 5th year for Kerns, would love to see a 20+ win season, if not 20, then a great Sunbelt record and good run at conference tourney. By Jan 1 we should have a winning record based on schedule, if we don't, the conference may eat us alive. Until Jan 1...Go Apps, pick up the pace.

It's the third game of the season. Every team takes time to gel and get in rhythm.
KenPom has Oregon St. ranked 175, App ranked 180. So, the result of this game is really in line with the statistics.
There's 27 more games on the schedule. I'd wait until at least game 10 or so to make a proclamation about how the entire season will go. Plus, for a mid-major, winning the conference tournament is really all that matter is the grand scheme.

Did we not defend the 3 or were they just hitting it? Stats were virtually dead even except the 3 ball and FT's. We had 8 blocks. Did we miss many easy short at the rim shots? Teams can look way better in January than in November. Hopefully we get some rhythm going.

They were hitting contested 3s in the first half (especially Pope). We dominated in the paint but did struggle to finish at the basket.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 8:03 amDid we not defend the 3 or were they just hitting it? Re: Oregon State 10:00 pm TIP
Same ole story, struggle at the rim and FT line. Guys can stroke 3s can’t hit a FT. mantis shooting 40% from 3 for the season, 25% from the FT line. 6 of our 9 regular players under 50%, 3 under 35%. This team will never become a regular winner if they can’t convert on these 2 easy components of the game. It makes no sense to me, very frustrating how good this group could be, just can’t hit the easy ones. And before anyone says it’s only been 3 games, it plagued this same group the entire year last year.

I wonder how much young players these days actually work on free throws. Are the days of the "gym rat" a thing of the past? It's interesting to watch younger teams warm up. Lots of jacking 3's. Obviously the analytics point to volume 3's but if you can't take advantage of the free shots and can't convert easy shots at the rim you are going to lose close games to teams who can do those things.

We've got a lot of guys that are 1 level scorers- just not used to taking shots from that area. That's not to say the others cant improve at other levels, but haven't seen it thus far in their 3-4 years on campus.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 9:11 amI wonder how much young players these days actually work on free throws. Lost to a team in OT where we traveled across the country. Yes, I hate to lose any game....but I can live with that. We need time to gel. The only way to get to big dance is win conference tournament.
