The good news is that App State beat Georgia State, extended its winning streak to seven, stayed in first place, went to 18-4 overall and Dustin Kerns had a good birthday. The bad news is that this team has to go to Statesboro.
App's Peach State two-step partner this week, second-place Troy, is leaving Statesboro having mollywhopped the Eagles Thursday night 84-63 behind 13 three-pointers and a 45-32 rebounding edge. And it wasn't that close. Troy led wire to wire.
Last Thursday in Boone, GS clawed, stayed around and it got them a brief lead in the second half. But the Apps closed the door afterward with key guard points. GS shot a lot less 3's than they normally do in that game, going 3 of 14.
The Eagles are 5-5 in the Sun Belt, trying to stay out of the bottom four and avoid that Tuesday first round game. After Boone, they won at ODU by six after trailing most the game. In fact, the Troy and App losses are their only ones in their last five games.
Hanner's always a chore for App State. I seriously doubt App will win by 21 like Troy did. If that happens, wonderful! But expect a nervy affair and for GS to try to shoot more 3's instead of challenging Abson, Spillers and Huntley down low. Plus they really don't like App State.
