Huge body blow. Big punch to the gut for Kerns and us. I'm not surprised though. Stuff like this is why I refuse to give to this pay to play system. There are about 30-40 schools who draw the type of money to pay players big money and we can't compete. I am so ready for this whole system to either collapse or see these moves to a LLC allow schools to restructure and get rid of sports that just lose money.

It's March/April, so that means Jordan Marsh is back in the portal.

Don't even joke about that! Lol. No desire to bring him back and not really concerned where he goes. He was a bad seed and has not changed.

Ok , fine. The coach I talked to at UNCA last year ultimately sought therapy. With time there is hope.

30-40 is light.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 5:40 pmHuge body blow. Big punch to the gut for Kerns and us. I'm not surprised though. I’d guess there are about 150-200 schools ahead of us in basketball NIL. Think about all the small private schools that don’t have or don’t prioritize football. The whole big east.

I am saying that there are probably 30-40 schools who have the money to pay almost whatever they want in football and basketball. I would imagine you are right that 150-200 schools spend more than we do in basketball. I do think that if football does not improve heavily we should shift a lot of football money over to basketball and bet that Kerns is more likely to get us where we want to be than the other coaches. I am not pulling for that to happen. I want to win 10+ games this year and be confident in Loggains but saying if we fall way short then I will be at that point to be curious to see what Kerns can do if we give him the bigger budget as opposed to just spending more on football.311neers wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2026 9:58 am30-40 is light.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 5:40 pmHuge body blow. That’s the second one. Strategy is different now that Luke has decided. In and out.

I think we have a good , and frankly realistic strategy now. I’m actually feeling pretty good about basketball.

With Banks, Vasser and Brim returning and adding these 2 new guys to the mix, we’re looking pretty good in the backcourt

Re: Offseason thread: recruiting, transfer portal schedule, general discussion
How many difference makers do we realistically need for our football team to achieve the goals and success many think is attainable? That being win the Sunbelt, get into the CFP discussion, play in a significant bowl game. How about basketball? Win the Belt, make the Big Dance, probably lose in the first round or maybe become the first day darling like High Point then quickly forgotten by the Sweet 16 round. It’s painfully obvious that at our level not fielding a football team creates more opportunities to succeed in basketball. I’m not advocating dropping football but isn’t it completely unrealistic to expect to bring in and keep any real talent for more than a year with our salary cap?

Re: Offseason thread: recruiting, transfer portal schedule, general discussion
We should be able to regularly compete with our peers and occasionally have a really good team that could upset a 4 or 5 seed. Kerns has been doing pretty good finding guys to compete, we’ve just been short 1 or 2 the past two seasons to get over the hump. But we’ve contended for regular season title up until the last week or two the past two seasons. Just have to figure out how to finish strong and not fade away at the end. Even before NIL and transfer portal, it’s not like we were making deep runs in the tournament. Our 99 team was senior laden and got smoked by Ohio State (or Wisconsin) in the first round.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2026 2:06 pmHow many difference makers do we realistically need for our football team to achieve the goals and success many think is attainable?
