9/11 Remembered
I know we all remember where we were at when the news broke. I had just returned from a response to an MVA with injuries. We had sat down in the squad room and had the news on in the background when the first plane hit. I'll never forget the live image of the second plane hitting as we were discussing the difficulties of fighting a fire that high up and what might have happened, and that realization, after a few seconds of shock, that we were under attack.
The VA specialized Confined Space Rescue Team offered our assistance after the towers fell and arrived just a few hours after the attack. I'll never forget the sound of hundreds of PASS alarms going off, each representing a fallen firefighter. And the sound of them slowly fading away as the batteries drained. I spent a combined 5 weeks in NYC digging through the rubble. My second and third trips I went on my own, to help the friends I had made on the first trip.
I just thought some might want to post their thoughts and feelings from that day.

Re: 9/11 Remembered
Indeed we all need to remember the events of that fateful day.
One of my first cousins had a son, born and raised in NC that always wanted to be a policeman in NYC, who worked very closely in the aftermath amongst all the debris. He later developed brain cancer and passed away and his cancer has since been attributed to this event.
God Bless them all!!

Re: 9/11 Remembered
I'm sorry for his loss. I've always considered myself lucky that our equipment included a respirator mask with changeable filters for times I wasn't wearing an SCBA. But there weren't enough of those to go around and hundreds of volunteers wore the hardware store type masks. Also many slept in tents and just about anywhere you could find a spare piece of ground during rest breaks and most wore little or no protection during those times. I know there has been a lot of illness among those who helped in the weeks after. Hopefully others will be ok. Enough people have passed away from that horrible day.eggers76 wrote:Indeed we all need to remember the events of that fateful day.

I was working in DC when the Pentagon was hit. I'll never forget seeing black smoke rising from the side that was hit. Soon after I was recalled to active duty, I'll never forget that day. God Bless America!!

Re: 9/11 Remembered
I was sitting in English class. The teacher stepped into the hall way and came back in tears. At this point in my life, I have lived about half in the American Century and half in the post-American century -- divided of course by the attacks on America that day and the subsequent rapid change in government and policy we've experienced since.

Re: 9/11 Remembered
The last semester at App. Heard a blip about a plane hitting WTC as I left the car in Stadium parking lot to go to a Business Ethics exam. Someone mentioned it briefly in there before the exam started.
Had 3-4 more classes that day, but they were all just watching and discussing.
The main feeling for me was anger, still is.
