I received an offer today for a free upgrade to Windows 10. Anyone have any input on the new version? I am uncertain as to whether to take this offer.

Our computer guy is quite optimistic about the Windows 10 previews he's tested so far. We will probably switch late this year if continued tests are strong.

Im running the developer preview on my laptop and my windows tablet and it's great in beta stages. They took what was great from windows 8.1 and put it on windows 7. It's more like 7 than 8. It's also very modern, new graphics, sounds, ect. They also finally got rid of internet explorer and created a new browser from the ground up called Microsoft edge that is really fast and fluid. It's free so I say why not, plus it makes your device feel like it is brand new again.

I've been beta testing Win 10 on my backup desktop and it's been fine so far. Tons better than any Win 8 platform and much closer to Win 7 but still allowing for the touchscreen functions for laptops, tablets, 2 in 1's, and phones. But it's important for everyone to realize that Microsoft's goal with Win 10 is to consolidate all users to one OS. Ultimately anyone without Win 10 will lose all support. If your computer is eligible for a free upgrade it's good for a year from July 29th, if they stick to the official release date. After that it will cost everyone wanting to use Windows. And not all Win 7 and Win 8 versions are eligible. Only Win 7 Home, Pro, And Ultimate with Service Pack 1 installed can upgrade for free. And only Win 8.1 users, minus Enterprise, can get it. Win 8 users need to upgrade to 8.1 to get 10 for free. Any older versions cannot upgrade for free.

Basically if you want to use any computer that's not an Apple or any device that uses a Windows platform, and don't like 10, you're going to have to use a completely different OS. They have been saying this for more than two years now and it looks like they are sticking to it this time. In a couple of years it's Win 10 or nothing. Considering their track record of every other OS being ok since 98(XP, 7) versus the off ones (ME, Vista, and 8), they are due to get this one right. Here's hoping they do since it appears they are following the Apple model and this is it for a long time. Windows 10 as the base platform and all future updates will just be additions to 10. Those of us who do a lot of tech work have been prepping for this for a long time. We'll know soon enough.
