It's time to re-read all his books. It's a good project to take on again.

I was gifted his last book that was published in 2018, The Fall of Gondolin. Hadn't had a chance to dig in but its going to get boosted to next in line.

I'm someone who has re-read The Lord of the Rings every few years since I first read it in high school 25 years ago, but it has never occurred to me to read the work Christopher Tolkien did. It sounds like you guys recommend them.

The huge series of 12 books that is the History of Middle Earth is not new material but lots and lots of revisions JRRT made in his ME writings that CT edited into the 12 volumes. The other books are edits of the nearly complete work of JRRT finished off to get ready for publishing so in a since they are new material. I consider these books (The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and his last few) to be canon in the ME legendarium and good reads if you like ME stories.


The HoME books are great to see how one author approached the process of writing but not for everyone and at times not for me.

I think I have everything JRRT published in book form or his son edited except one book of JRRT paintings that when I finally found a copy online the price was around $200 and that was a pass. A few I found as bulk paperback and the HoME are mostly used hardback. I have not read it all but have read most of it. I think I picked most of this up just after the LOTR movies when there was a supply of books some wanted to get rid of since there was some demand and I found a sweet spot with the prices at the time. I don't have the very last book yet. I really need to get that.
