Hugo Chavez dead at 58

Hugo Chavez is dead at age 58. Chavez appointed his own successor and puppet--a 54 year-old high school grad and former bus driver. This should be a different kind of challenge for John Kerry's State Dept.

BTW, wonder if Michael Moore still wants to receive his health care in Cuba?

You make it sound like no one ever dies of cancer in the US. Cuba does have a much lower infant mortality rate than the USA.

That wasn't my intention. Actually, I lost my Dad to liver and kidney cancer. I am a melanoma patient.

The initial report that I read acknowledged that Chavez was being treated for cancer, but that he actually died of a virulent case of streptococcus pneumonia.

He has had so many chemo treatments that killed his immune system, that I'm not surprised at all that something else killed him before the cancer did. No offense to any doctors on here but I wouldn't exactly be praising the overall healthcare in the US. There is a reason many of the wealthy people who can afford it go elsewhere for some surgeries including sports athletes that go other places to have special operations. We are still very good compared to most of the rest of the world but I wouldn't say we are the top dogs anymore.

We're not only NOT the top dog, we're usually list about 30th in most rankings. Unless it has to do with the cost of health care in which case we're on top, very alone at the top.

I would not having a problem going to most developed countries for health care.

Not to say that we don't have some great research centers, etc, but that isn't the care usually provided to most.

I'm a proud American, but our health care not something to be proud of.

People go overseas to get surgeries and treatments, that arent APPROVED by the US government. FDA baby.

The US has the highest QUALITY healthcare, but not the most accessable.

Fair enough, and good luck with the melanoma. My dad died of bladder cancer after a kidney transplant. I think he had a very small speck of bladder cancer that the Drs. missed in the screening before the transplant. My mom had breast cancer during all of this. That was also the year after the school fire. A bit of stress in my life those years. I gained about 30 lbs I think.

The father of a friend of mine had an advanced stage of Prostate Cancer. He went to multiple doctors here, and they all said they wouldn't be able to cure it. One doctor told him of an alternative treatment being used in Germany. It was developed here in the US, but the FDA wouldn't approve it. Fortunately he had the ability to pay for the treatments and the trip to Germany. It's been 3 years and he is cancer free.

Well if Wake Med for heart and Duke for most everything else are 30th then I'll take 30th.

As much as I trust any other government's stats on this topic. If they are going to lie then what not go ahead and lie and be top 10. Maybe having the lowest rates in the world would be hard to believe but why just lie to be just ahead of us and Canada.

Also one list was from the CIA. I imagine we have enough spies in that country to keep decent tabs on what is happening. Unlike Cuba which does not have a military base in our country, we do have a large base on their soil. We also spend millions sending radio propaganda their way (which is mostly blocked anyways.) If we as a country are doing all of that plus an embargo, then why would one of the more reactionary parts of our own government want to make Cuba look good.

I think the statistics are accurate enough to accept.

Our system in not so bad that no one lives. Shen it comes to one's one health I can't dismiss a statement like yours, but in the bigger picture we spend more and get less. We spend A LOT MORE, and get less. I am glad it saved your life, but to think many, many others have not died due to lack of access is either blind to reality, ignorant to many reports that support the claim that lack of health care access kills many US citizens each year , or very selfish in that one only cares about one's own access. I know some people that are the last case and being selfish, but I would truly hope that is not you.

I'm just not a member of the blame America First crowd. If Cuba's health care system is so great, why did Castro (Fidel) go out of the country several years ago for treatment?
There's not much you can tell me about the CIA. My first cousin will have in 30 years in 2014 and another cousin has already retired after 30. Believe me, they have a hell of a lot more to do than keep tabs on Cuba's infant mortality rates, and such.

My liver specialist performed over 50 liver transplants last year and has a tremendous success rate and to boot a large number of them are in lower income brackets. Every time I visit his office, he repeats that his primary goal is to keep me from ever having to have one. He has succeeded for over 10 or 11 years.

I agree, bbc, 1000+ percent. Rep point. To top it off, Bowman Gray treats a boatload of indigent patients..especially children.

Our friends daughter was in Spain (UNC Spanish Major) doing course work. She and friends go skiing. She falls & literally breaks her face in several places and breaks her arm. Spanish Drs. complete a couple of surgerys on her face. When she is recovered enough to come home she goes to Drs. at UNC. They had to completely redo (re-break & re set) her jaws through several more surgerys. Thankfully she has completely recovered and back in Spain finishing her work.

I'll take 30th also.

I assume Fidel found better care is why he left. Pointing out that we are not #1 in everything does not make one a blame America First. And stating that Cuba leads us in certain things that I find important does not mean that Cuba has all the answers and is leading the world in this or any other area. Not realizing the US as a country has problems, and that sometimes, maybe many times, looking around at other countries might give us an answer and our lack of doing such would be a bigger concern to me than being concerned about whom is blaming America First.

If the CIA is not keeping tabs on the Cuba infant mortality rates, then why are they publishing the numbers? Maybe they are keeping tabs on this very thing, it may not be priority #1, but the CIA has a huge budget, so I am sure they are getting it done with some reasonable correctness. Either that or the CIA and your family members are lying to us. And far be it from me to blame and accuse the gov't of lying to us citizens. And though you and I don't generally agree on much in the way of politics I would like to think you are trustworthy and not prone to deceit and that could and should be extended to your family members as well. So I accept the CIA in this case.
