Not all Englishmen saw it as a penalty. Though, England will be playing for the title regardless.

OK - I need some help from you guys who really know soccer (football) - I don't understand having 2 guys take penalty kicks in the most important game maybe forever for England and they have only played for 2 minutes out of the 120+
Seems to me, way too much pressure for guys who haven't played???

Same reason the DH is used in baseball. Teams practice penalty kicks. These 2 subs ( who both play on PL teams and start) were some of the best.

Sorry Rek - I'm not saying you are wrong about that - the DH plays the entire game - I'm just saying a guy who has sat on the bench for something like 135 minutes and then to put them in with 2 minutes remaining and say - OK, go win us our first EuroCup - terrible, terrible pressure on these guys no matter how long they have played in PL - as you know, they still talk about Southgate's PK miss for England - Just me, I guess, but he has guys out there who have played and given everything they had and they stand by and watch 2 subs miss the most important shots in the history (possibly) of the Country ---

and there is this ----

"England's Football Association released a statement in the early hours of Monday morning condemning the online racist abuse of players following the team's penalty shootout loss to Italy in Sunday's Euro 2020 final.

The sides drew 1-1 after extra time, and Italy won the shootout 3-2, with England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who are all Black, missing spot kicks."

This soccer thing is over?!?

Sweet, now I can’t stop getting the constant ESPN notifications on my phone, I never asked for.

Ignore me, I just really hate soccer. I’d rather watch the grass grow.

Its a pretty common strategy, though you might like to do it a bit earlier. They were only in for two-three minutes. These are guys who have taken them at the highest level and likely were the best when they worked on them in anticipation of such an event. Saka, the player who missed the final shot, apparently had not taken a penalty in a live game for his club team. That seems a more glaring error in judgement to me.

Thanks - I don't really follow soccer unless it's Olympics or World Cup or other National Events - We follow our Women's Team much more closely ---
What is the status of our Men's team? - they didn't qualify for the Olympics - correct? - Isn't the World Cup next year? - What's the status?

I honestly tried to watch a little bit of this game yesterday. Watched some, went outside, cleaned the pool, came back in..still 1-1. Did something else for a while- still 1-1. Watched a little bit of the overtime (or extra time)…still 1-1.

I agree about using guys off the bench for penalty kicks. Seems crazy. You basically decide to kick it left, right or straight and hope the keeper goes the other way. I know little about soccer but it appeared that a couple of guys gave it away as to where they were kicking the ball. That is a ridiculous amount of pressure to put on a guy who has sat the whole day. I compare it to a pinch hitter in baseball. Bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, 2 on down a run, must get a hit.

It cracks me up to see the people in the stands absolutely losing their freaking minds over the game. They basically play for minutes on end in the middle section then one team makes a move and the crowd goes wild.

England lost the game when they scored too quickly. They abandoned their game plan and played to secure the 1-0 lead.

Then selected a 19 year old to be in the 5th spot for PKs. They guy is a stud, but put him 2nd or 3rd.

Count me in the camp that has a really hard time getting excited about European soccer. I was in Spain for 13 days during this tournament and although I could see the excitement in all of the fans watching the various games, it just does nothing for me. Same with cycling and most other sports that are big tv draws in Europe. Good think it is less than 2 months until kickoff of the real football season.

Just imagine being at BOA watching the Panthers V Bucs and it’s a 0-0 game. Each team moves the ball consistently between the 30’s all day and the crowd chants and goes nuts when a back rips off an 8 yarder or a pass play goes for 10. Nobody makes even a FG. The excitement mounts as the Panthers finally drive but the clock runs out. We go to OT. Both teams still come up empty and with a minute left the Bucs are on their own 2 yard line. Brady drops back and Burns sacks him for a safety- Panthers take a thriller 2 nil. Yep that’s exciting sports.

To each his own. I love college football (could care less about the NFL) but I love soccer equally as well. Soccer on TV doesn't do it justice. Go watch some of the world's best teams from the European leagues and you will appreciate the skill involved in the game regardless of the score. No one says you have to like the game or even watch it but I'm always amazed at those who trash the sport because there's not a score every minute. It is obviously a more difficult game to play regardless.

This has been the summer of Euro sports for me. I typically follow EPL and cycling at a decent level (used to ride bikes a ton), and I’ve gotten back into F1 after not paying attention to it for a decade. The racing is entertaining enough, but the strategy is infinitely greater than NASCAR (which I’ve never been into much).

I’ve watched every minute of every Euro 2021 that I can.

I’ll admit that I was being very facetious with my example but there is a huge difference in a great 14-7 game and a scoreless battle with little to no offense. I completely get the love for soccer and yes to each his own. My oldest son loves the game and was talking about the great Hispanic players the other day. Someone earlier said that in their opinion England scored early then basically tried to milk a 1-0 score for a win. Would that be like kicking a FG on an opening possession then running the ball on every play to shorten the game? Or like in the old days with no shot clock playing 4 corners? I’m not a fan of the NBA with all 3’s and no defense and I don’t dig 50-49 Big 12 no defense football but to watch endless dribbling in the middle of the pitch with almost no shots on goal is beyond boring for me.
