Same reason the DH is used in baseball. Teams practice penalty kicks. These 2 subs ( who both play on PL teams and start) were some of the best.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 5:01 pmOK - I need some help from you guys who really know soccer (football) - I don't understand having 2 guys take penalty kicks in the most important game maybe forever for England and they have only played for 2 minutes out of the 120+
Seems to me, way too much pressure for guys who haven't played???
England musta used all its energy against Denmark....
Sorry Rek - I'm not saying you are wrong about that - the DH plays the entire game - I'm just saying a guy who has sat on the bench for something like 135 minutes and then to put them in with 2 minutes remaining and say - OK, go win us our first EuroCup - terrible, terrible pressure on these guys no matter how long they have played in PL - as you know, they still talk about Southgate's PK miss for England - Just me, I guess, but he has guys out there who have played and given everything they had and they stand by and watch 2 subs miss the most important shots in the history (possibly) of the Country ---Rekdiver wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 7:25 pmSame reason the DH is used in baseball. Its a pretty common strategy, though you might like to do it a bit earlier. They were only in for two-three minutes. These are guys who have taken them at the highest level and likely were the best when they worked on them in anticipation of such an event. Saka, the player who missed the final shot, apparently had not taken a penalty in a live game for his club team. That seems a more glaring error in judgement to me.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 7:06 amSorry Rek - I'm not saying you are wrong about that - the DH plays the entire game - I'm just saying a guy who has sat on the bench for something like 135 minutes and then to put them in with 2 minutes remaining and say - OK, go win us our first EuroCup - terrible, terrible pressure on these guys no matter how long they have played in PL - as you know, they still talk about Southgate's PK miss for England - Just me, I guess, but he has guys out there who have played and given everything they had and they stand by and watch 2 subs miss the most important shots in the history (possibly) of the Country ---Rekdiver wrote: ↑Sun Jul 11, 2021 7:25 pmSame reason the DH is used in baseball. To each his own. I love college football (could care less about the NFL) but I love soccer equally as well. Soccer on TV doesn't do it justice. Go watch some of the world's best teams from the European leagues and you will appreciate the skill involved in the game regardless of the score. No one says you have to like the game or even watch it but I'm always amazed at those who trash the sport because there's not a score every minute. It is obviously a more difficult game to play regardless.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:49 pmJust imagine being at BOA watching the Panthers V Bucs and it’s a 0-0 game. Each team moves the ball consistently between the 30’s all day and the crowd chants and goes nuts when a back rips off an 8 yarder or a pass play goes for 10. Nobody makes even a FG. The excitement mounts as the Panthers finally drive but the clock runs out. We go to OT. Both teams still come up empty and with a minute left the Bucs are on their own 2 yard line. Brady drops back and Burns sacks him for a safety- Panthers take a thriller 2 nil. Yep that’s exciting sports.
Tell me you haven't see a great 14-7 football game or 21-7 or 21-14?bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:49 pmJust imagine being at BOA watching the Panthers V Bucs and it’s a 0-0 game. I’ll admit that I was being very facetious with my example but there is a huge difference in a great 14-7 game and a scoreless battle with little to no offense. I completely get the love for soccer and yes to each his own. My oldest son loves the game and was talking about the great Hispanic players the other day. Someone earlier said that in their opinion England scored early then basically tried to milk a 1-0 score for a win. Would that be like kicking a FG on an opening possession then running the ball on every play to shorten the game? Or like in the old days with no shot clock playing 4 corners? I’m not a fan of the NBA with all 3’s and no defense and I don’t dig 50-49 Big 12 no defense football but to watch endless dribbling in the middle of the pitch with almost no shots on goal is beyond boring for me.WVAPPeer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 3:51 pmTell me you haven't see a great 14-7 football game or 21-7 or 21-14?bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:49 pmJust imagine being at BOA watching the Panthers V Bucs and it’s a 0-0 game.
