DonorsChoose.org

Unread post by McLeansvilleAppFan » Tue Sep 09, 2014 9:58 pm

I hope everyone will indulge me for another DonorsChoose.org project for my classroom. I know the MMB ought to be about Yosef Club memberships and donations, however some of you have helped in the past and I wanted anyone interested to be aware.

And to be honest, as much as I would love a few dollars donated to my project you can search on DonorsChoose.org for many K-12 projects in various subject areas, locations and other criteria. And they seem to run a fairly decent non-profit. There are some fees and costs added in but their overhead seems reasonable, and I have had a few things funded before all the costs were donated.

http://www.donorschoose.org/project/pri ... eid=111689

If the MMB is the biggest donor I will get some block "A" stickers to decorate the printer. I was able to do this with other projects MMB helped fund in the past. If you leave comments just end with MMB and I will know the reference.

Lastly, if you do give a donation before 13 September the donation will be matched 1 for 1. And of course done all donations are tax deductible.

I don't know if my stating the last bit here will help or hurt, but I have worked on getting grants the last few years, especially since the school fire. Between grants, DonorsChoose.org, and a private gift last year I have received about $35,000 since 2009 or so. The gift fell into my lap, but otherwise I have been working hard to get needed items for my classroom, and I take this seriously.

I just gave a donation in memory of my mother but I forgot to leave the MMB at the end of the message. Sorry about that. Just wanted you to know it was from me.

Thanks for passing your project along, McLeansville. Donors Choose is such a great thing. My girlfriend (a 4th grade teacher) has completed a couple of projects through them and without the assistance of those who donate (who in many cases she has no knowledge of) her classroom wouldn't have the opportunities they do. She actually just received a supply of a bunch of live animal kits (think dwarf frogs, chameleons, etc.) that peak the kids interest like very few things in a 10-year old textbook can. Thanks again for passing along your project and good luck. To me, educators that take the time and effort (and I know firsthand the effort pre/during/post project) to complete a Donors Choose project are going above and beyond and that's a big deal.

Thanks for the kind words, and I like hearing of other success stories, especially involving science. (I am a bit biased.)

Thanks for posting these opportunities. It's great to be able to help with specific projects.

My fellow MMBers. I have posted about Donors Choose going back to just before the move to YC/MMB. I try not to get in the way with this too much. And I know a few of you have given to my projects every time I have asked. And that is very much appreciated.

In 24 hours about 2/3 of my funding needs have been met, and everyone that has given except the last person, has mentioned MMB. You can rest assured that there will be some Block A stickers on this printer. They will be placed prominently but in a location that will do no harm to the printer. I want this printer to last a long time and be used by many students.

And in all seriousness, I am very humbled by this outpouring of generosity. It really is appreciated.

Don't think I use tax-payer time on my job logging onto YC/MMB, because I don't. But I am making an exception. The printer is already funded as of this morning! I cannot believe it was funded so quickly, and almost all by MMBers. Maybe all of it was funded by MMB members.

I had forgotten to send along the code needed to double your gifts, and I feel bad about not doing that on the original post. I think DC may have retroactively doubled the donations when I explained what happened. If they did not double the donations then that will allow funds to be available for other deserving projects, which is not the worst thing that could happen. There are lots of deserving projects for all grade levels and subjects.

Thank you again for such a wonderful outpouring of support for my science classroom. It really is appreciated and will be used in a productive manner with my students, while I advertise for App State. :-)

Now I have to grade papers. That deserves a :( , as it is not part of the job I like.

DonorsChoose tracked down all the MMB donations and doubled the donations after the fact. Since the printer was funded I think some or all of you will be or may already have received a gift card that you can use at Donors Choose for a future donation.

What I was told via email was to let you know that you can send the code to me and I can use this on a future project, and I do have other things I could use in my classroom. I try to only post on here once a year, but I generally try and have two Donors Choose projects each school year.

Of course another option is to find a worthy project that is as or more deserving as my project. There are plenty of worthy projects available, and I certainly do not want to be considered greedy.

Again, thanks for the support.

PS If you live in the Triad area there should be an Astronomy related bit on me mid-week next week on WFMY.

Do you know if they got mine? As I said I forgot to add the MMB to my post. Hope they got it.

They should have received the donation. If things are not funded they go into a pot that allows doubling of donations as mine received and other uses to fund projects. If for some reason your donation arrived as someone just finished off the project then your donation may end up going into the other pot of money to help projects close but not quite there.

DC does not really have a stance on the secret message I asked everyone to include, but they did not object when I notified them of what had happened and how I knew the connection. So they are ok with it I guess.

Had I not asked for the secret MMB code there would have been no way to track backwards for the doubling of the donation. Then again had I known to tell you about the code to use at checkout (INSPIRE) it would have been a moot point. I thought the doubling was automatic and it was not come to find out.

Either way I thank you for the donation. I'll be posting pictures in a week or two when the printer arrives.

Anytime.

I should have used a different choice of words. I donated just after you posted back on the 9th/10th. I meant to ask if they figured out mine was a MMB donation. I just wanted to be sure they matched it.

The printer came in today. :D

On a side note, I posted about Dononrs Choose on the Catamount Pride board. I am friendly on that board, at least for the last few years. I was not posting on my behalf but was asking if they minded if I gave out their URL to some WCU alumni I teach with. No one is forcing anyone to donate. I posted and waited. Finally one person thought it was a good idea. I posted again thinking maybe the Saturday football had people away from the CP board. This was a few days. Still nothing. The CP board is not overly active but I was surprised to only have one reply, when I was asking on behalf of helping some of their own.

Contrast to the outpouring of support from this board.

Thanks again.

I have been using this printer through the year so far. I only recently gotten around to finishing off the thank you part of this project. I never had a camera around when I was using the printer and I did want to include some students. What should have taken a few minutes ended up dragging on for a bit longer than I meant.

As promised the printer is sporting a block "A' so to have some low level advertising for App State. The laptop that is attached often to the printer is also sporting a block "A." MMB helped fund the laptop a few years ago. The laptop is still going strong and still being a billboard for App. I let my students be aware that is has been App alumni and App supporters that have funded this technology in majority and to honor that I have placed the stickers on the devices.
