50k starting for new FL teachers

It's the new obscene hiring strategy in education. Pay well to lure bright new teachers for their first 3-5 years, then cap the salary and don't pay for longevity or advanced degrees. Saves millions in salary steps and pensions. Morale is high among the twenty-somethings and disillusioned experienced teachers either work a flat salary scale or join the mass exodus out the door. Just like in NC, where experienced teachers endured the recession and frozen salaries for years, just to see the "historic" pay increases go to new teachers, while they got about 1%. :roll:

If the voters of NC wanted change it would happen. They don't. It is all about priorities. Very sad.

That strategy was intentional in NC. The 'leaders' want to force out older teachers because, as you said, it saves millions in salaries and benefits. My wife is a teacher and she just snuck in the segment with the bigger increase. I happen to think this is those folks in Raleigh trying to implement a corporate strategy that relies on young, cheap labor but moves it back out of the company just as quickly. Unfortunately that is going to result in a lot of lost institutional knowledge.
