RIP: Leslie Gore
The hits keep on comin' for all the world's aging Baby Boomers. Singer-songwriter Leslie Gore has lost her fight with lung cancer. May she RIP.

There's a restaurant here in Asheville that plays nothing but oldies. Of course, we love it. We're forever remembering when songs came out and what we were doing then. Alas, even if the whole world has forgotten, the song remembers when.

I saw her at a Big WAYS concert in the old Charlotte Coliseum for 99 whole cents and again in old Varsity Gym on campus. Super talented and classy all the way.DaphneUrquhart wrote:There's a restaurant here in Asheville that plays nothing but oldies. Of course, we love it. Re: RIP: Leslie Gore
You are correct m'lady. Most cars in the 60's had AM radios only. There were few FM stations in "fly-over" country. You had to move up to the Lincoln, Caddy or Chrysler Imperial to find FM radios. Those cars went to the 1 per-cent-ers in the population! Then, they had to drive to Charlotte, Atlanta, Philly or Miami to use them.DaphneUrquhart wrote:Big WAYS ... 610 on the AM dial, right?NewApp wrote:

Big WAYS was THE daytime station in central and western NC. And up and down the east coast from Maine to Miami, there was WNMB in North Myrtle Beach (Ocean Drive & Cherry Grove) with beach music 24 x 7 x 365.
Then there were the old stand-bys at night when "local" stations were required to cut their broadcast wattage. 50,000 watt WLS in Chicago with the Dick Biondi Show from 9 PM 'til midnight seven days a week was the biggie. Then WABC in New York, WCAU in Philly and WBZ in Boston were also popular. It was amazing how strong those AM signals could be at night, but they did fade in and out in WNC.

Exactly, Daphne. I went to several of the 99 cent Big Ways Birthday Parties as they were called. If I recall correctly, the first 5 were indoor and a second or third was held in the old Memorial Stadium.DaphneUrquhart wrote:Big WAYS ... 610 on the AM dial, right?NewApp wrote:

Re: RIP: Leslie Gore
WBT-AM was actually reaching from Maine and portions of Nova Scotia all the way to the Bahamas. It was 100,000 watts as I believe it still is. In the early and mid 70's I was able to pick it up super clearly from Philadelphia with very little static.asu66 wrote:You are correct m'lady. Most cars in the 60's had AM radios only. I was a Dick Bionde/WLS fan; but Amen to Cousin Brucey. I listened to him when WLS faded out. But from '72 to '82 (my grad school years), Bionde ( who called himself The Wild I-talian) was at WNMB in OD (Ocean Drive) N. Myrtle Beach. That was pretty special.

I think this site has been linked here before, but even though it hasn't been updated in a while, I can still waste a ton of time on it -- especially in the section on Z100. Radio, newspapers, television, etc. used to be fun, in the years BCC (before clear channel).

I didn't list WBT because it was essentially a news-weather-talk radio station with Arthur Smith and Fred Kirby country music thrown in at night. I don't recall WBT doing much, if any, Top 40 stuff. They filled the day with Doug Mayes, Cloudy McLean, Betty Feezor and company. They even did some simulcast broadcasting with Mayes, McLean, Feezor, Smith and KIrby on WBTV.NewApp wrote:WBT-AM was actually reaching from Maine and portions of Nova Scotia all the way to the Bahamas. Ha. I think you're remembering WAPE *The Mighty 690* in Jacksonville--The Big APE! It was one of the so-called screamer stations. Check this link and you'll remember why...

Re: RIP: Leslie Gore
Chuck, WBT played music during most of the day time hours. It was mostly for the older generation of the time. WBTV, Channel 3 had Fred Kirby, Clyde McLean, Doug Mayes, Arthur Smith, Betty Feezor, et.al. Both WBT and WBTV were CBS affiliates for various periods of time.asu66 wrote:I didn't list WBT because it was essentially a news-weather-talk radio station with Arthur Smith and Fred Kirby country music thrown in at night. The Big Ape. That's the one. Used to listen to it all the time on the beach. Thanks Chuck.
