An ugly incident at the end of a Texas high school football game is being investigated after a pair of players from San Antonio John Jay High School appear to intentionally target and hit an official in the final seconds of a game against Marble Falls High School.

According to Ben Baby of the San Antonio Express-News, the Northside Independent School District and the University Interscholastic League are investigating the incident, which was caught on video from multiple angles.

Spectators at the game told SB Nation that the incident in question came after multiple unsportsmanlike penalties earlier in the game, including the ejection of a John Jay player who threw a punch. The attack on the official came with about a minute left on the clock, while Marble Falls was attempting to run out the clock on a 15-9 victory.

Players and students from John Jay have tweeted that the hit came after racial slurs were used by the targeted official. John Jay starting quarterback Moses Reynolds is not among those who made allegations of racist comments, but did seem to come to the defense of his team's actions

If the principal were to forfeit the remainder of the season, I'd have no problem with it. There is no excuse for this type of behavior. Even if what they said about the referee was true, call a time out and notify the coach.

I really have a hard time believing that the ref uttered racial slurs at the young men. But the players actions were a blatant attempt to injure a defenseless individual. They should be kicked off the team and banned from high school athletics for the remainder of their high school carers.

The school and the team got ugly, ugly news coverage from the print and electronic media all weekend. They did themselves no good from their actions--regardless of their reasons. Much of the TV and cable coverage included slo-mo vids making player identification a real no-brainer. The's no acceptable excuse for the loss of self-control and dignity.

Tell your coach, keep your hands to yourself and your mouths shut. Grit your teeth and let the adults handle it.

Do kids today have some misunderstanding that certain types of slur or insult justifies assault? They defend it like a racial slur makes it acceptable.

I think you are on to something. To me, it's akin to the term being disrespected. Kids view life with entitlement these days. I offend my teenage daughter on adaily basis. I don't know how I do it, but I do.

Unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened in Texas:

There also might be more than just players involved:

Police: Texas high school football players 'targeted,' 'blindsided' game official

(CNN)The defensive back comes charging in at full speed, knocking his blindsided target to the ground. A teammate follows moments later by diving in helmet-first.

These kinds of bone-crushing hits often land the players involved on football highlight reels. But this time, they could land the players in jail.

The reason: They didn't level an opposing high school player but a game official.

No arrests have been made. Police in Marble Falls, Texas, said they are investigating the incident.

Investigators have contacted Burnet County Attorney Eddie Arredondo, whose jurisdiction includes Marble Falls, and the prosecutor has said he is open to filing charges, Marble Falls Police Department spokesman Tom Dillard said.

Dillard wouldn't speculate on the timing of any potential charges. If charges are filed, he said, the football players could be looking at counts of assault.

Individuals 17 and older are considered adults in Texas. Dillard said he did not know the players' ages.

While they await their fate, the pair from San Antonio's John Jay High School have already paid a heavy price.
