In a perfect world it should be about what the school can do for the kid, academically and athletically.

Regardless of any other points, relationships are very important. NOTHING good happens in any situation when you are dealing with students and athletes until a relationship is built.

So when recruiting AT ASU, I think you have to sell the school (college), the facilities, and build a quick relationship with the kid. You have to be a good judge as to if mom needs to be sold, dad, or just the kid. A lot of kids today need a "family" atmosphere that they can hang their hat on. The thing "I" like about our staff is they are all able to converse and "build" that initial relationship.

If you can't sell ASU's facilities you might not need to be up on the mountain. And for the degree programs we have those are easy sells! (We do not have a bunch of "higher professional" programs of study). (engineering, law, medicine, etc.)

I listened to one of our coaches talk to a kid who wanted to be an engineer. The coach said the road to an degree in engineering is a 5-6 year path. The kid can get his undergrad and easily transfer to any school of engineering if his grades are right to start with and may face less scrutiny than a kid already at the other school.

ASU from facilities to school/colleges is a pretty easy sell....the relationship is something else, but I like our crowd. They can sell ASU, themselves as position coaches, and thus the kid!

I do not think our staff is sitting around waiting on someone to fall in their laps...they are working this recruiting trail! We will see how well they do in a couple of weeks!
Exactly. Credit goes first to the coaches and then the rest comes into play.

With Singleton opting for Duke we probably need to ink another DB. He would have a shot to play in his home town come 2014!
I think you're probably correct although after watching Brown's videos I wasn't too upset about losing Singleton. Although this guy is small (other sites have him listed at 160 and 165) I have been watching videos of him and he has very good technique and had 135 tackles his senior year from the CB spot. We'll see if he commits to us instead of Hawaii (has an offer from them) or anyone else who might step up in the next couple of weeks.
Hope he doesn't take a visit out there like another App commit did years ago. Sparky had the commitment of a kicker from Georgia who Hawaii got on late and offered him a visit. The kid said he was "solidly" committed to ASU so Sparky TOLD him to take the free trip to the islands. Bad mistake. Once that country boy from Georgia got a look at those hula skirts it was all over. Had we held on to him ASU would have had the greatest kicking combo in the world. Harold Alexander as punter and Jason Elam as kicker. Now you know the rest of the story.

I wonder how this affects Tshumbi Johnson's situation with Cincinnatti?

This is what we've been watching. While, according to most reports, his scholarship was not one that was dropped, he was committed there before he came from Florida to visit us last week. There has to be some interest there or I don't think he would have made the trip. The second part is we are recruiting him as a QB while the rest are offering as a WR. It's his decision if he wants a chance to play QB or have to convert to WR. Plus no matter what happens it's going to be a mess at Cincinnati for a little while. He's got a big choice to make.

In watching his film he reminds me a lot of Cadet. If QB didn't work out he could just as easily be a RB as he could be a WR. Guess we watch and see.

I would be shocked if Tshumbi doesn't go to Cincinnati. Just in the past day he posted a pic on twitter of him in a Cincinnati jersey during his official visit and said something to the fact that he does it for his family and friends. Remember he comes from a program with some major FBS talent, I don't see Tshumbi committing to a FCS school when teammates are going to FSU, Alabama, and other big programs.

Even last week on his official visit to App, he said on Twitter he was headed to NC for a visit, not once did he mention us by name. It was like he didn't want people to know.

I agree on the tweets. Haven't been real thrilled with what he posts but a lot of them do that. Doesn't make it right. And it really doesn't matter much as he is in Cincinnati this weekend.

EDIT: Sorry Saint..I was on the phone when I was typing that reply. I meant to add that I wasn't commenting in the previous post on him as a person, only as a player. I not real impressed, just like you, with what I am reading. Sometimes it's hard to tell since a lot of kids talk like that these days but the jury is still out for me.

We've done a pretty good job of stealing UAB recruits so far. Might as well try a few of them. ;)

Lee wright is a major steal! He was Charlotte TD Club Defensive POY after posting 140 tackles, 4 ints (3 he took to the house) and 6 special teams TDs.

His coach has stated he is the second best player his has ever coached only behind Jadevon Clowney. Keep in mind, coach Carrol, while he was at South Pointe, coached players like Davonte Halloman and Stephon Gillmore.

Fantastic football played in the York area with team like SouthPointe and Northwestern.

Good article. Was told that he wants to play at App and would accept if offered but apparently we have backed off and that the Citadel was pressing hard for him.

Seems like an odd fit to me. At his size (5' 10", 192 pounds), you'd think he would be a better fit elsewhere, perhaps safety. If he wants to play OLB he would need to gain AT LEAST 30 pounds. That's quite a transformation...

This doesn't happen often. Stephenson, Ga., OG Justin Haymes, a player we showed interest in a few months ago, has flipped his commitment from Georgia Southern to Western Carolina, according to his coach.

Somebody needs to get in the Car or on the phone and go talk to this kid! He is to good to go the JUCO route. He needs to see what Price did this season, and how high Quick got drafted. Maybe a trip to Boone would help this kid realize what he could become and what we have to offer him. He might not be as good as I think he is but he has size and would be a match-up nightmare along side of Price, my own thought is he is a steal. GPA is good and speed for his size.

Pilotwx: My interpretation of the story, and the fact that McClure hasn't been on any official visits, is that he has yet to qualify.

I guess he didn't have the grades for the Stink so he went the community college route.

Maybe he actually visited Statesboro for the first time.

I'm still not out. I really don't care what the kid brings to the table, I say run. I guess I'm one of the few that believe that by 17/18 you either have character or you don't. I refuse to believe that a 17/18 year old "kid" doesn't know that he is being watched, that his tweets are being watched, that he doesn't know what is proper from what is not. I don't really care that a lot of kids talk like that, doesn't make it right. I can't use the "N" word so neither can you...even if you are an African-American. I don't use the word "honky" or "cracker" to refer to myself and I'd be offended if someone of another race, or even my own race, did as well. If I refer to my friends as such, then feel free to call me the loser that I am.
