Post Season Play

Unread post by jorpaynoasu » Wed Mar 27, 2013 5:17 pm

I didn't get to hear or see all of the press conference but from what I have heard and read, we will not be eligible for the FCS playoffs this season. Can someone explain why that is the case? If I remember correctly, Old Dominion was not eligible for a conf title but did play in the playoffs last season.
Just curious.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

ODU did not make their official announcement until after the June 1 deadline and played this past season at 63 scholarships. Essentially, they made their announcement, but did not begin the reclassification process. They just delayed everything by a year. They, like us, will be ineligible for the FCS playoffs this year and will be FBS transitional in 2014. They will be bowl-eligible at the same time we will, in 2015.

According to Benson the SB wanted us to be fully ready in 2015.

I probably missed this, but what's the deal with scholarships?

Are we locked in at 63 for this year and increase through 2014 into 2015?

I believe I read that we can begin to add for the 2013 season, then be fully funded at the FBS level for 2014. What I don't know is how this would affect transfers - ie can FBS transfers play right away since we are technically in transition.
Give 'em hell!

Gotcha, that's what I thought I had read/heard. That's awesome that we can start SB play fully funded and striving for a conference title.

Will be interested to see how the scholarship thing shakes out this year. If there are even enough recruits or players left to give them to at this point?

If allowed to begin using extra scholarships in 2013, it wouldn't surprise me to see a couple preferred walk-ons to be given a scholarship.

what about the additional scholarships coming from some players being given full scholarships? Correct me if i am wrong but i thought i read that at the FCS you can split up your scholarships but at the FBS all are full scholarships

That was my thinking also. We signed an unusually large number of PWO's this year (13 on signing day I think) and the talent level seemed very high. In some cases, there might be a need to see them perform (either athletically or academically) but in some I would think there is a possibility we could give a scholarship. Most likely, I think we'll look to the transfer channels since 2013 will be our last year to fully avail ourselves of this option as our final FCS season. I do think we'll hold back some schollies with the intent of rewarding some of those preferred walk ons...but just my guess.

I started a separate thread the other day to talk about potentials transfers. I really think it's a golden opportunity right now for the program. It's almost like stealing. You can convince kids to come to Boone, they don't have to sit out a year and they STILL get to play for a FBS team. Couple that with the fact that it will help us gradually get up to the 22 extra scholarships we need, it's a homerun.
