That game was surreal. It was like Waterboy2. They were giving us safeties and the ball in great field position because they knew our defense could beat them but our offense couldn’t. We must move on and play for pride. Finishing 3rd in the conference is disappointing; finishing 3rd in the East would be a disaster.

Sorry, but that's hogwash. We only play half the games at home. We were gifted this game and let it go. Team has been uninterested all year.

Prior to this season, imagine if someone told you we would get to play Louisiana and they would be incapable of punting.
People on here would have picked us to win by 30 and they’d be right, we should.
That’s my take away.

If changes aren’t made to the offensive staff then I’m done with Clark honestly. We can make all these COVID excuses that we want to but there’s isn’t any excuse for having Zac Thomas look inept with 40 passing yards through 3 quarters at HOME. This is crazy

Re: Louisiana at APP Game Day Thread
I vehemently disagree. His biggest mistake was hiring a Marshall alum castoff as an OC. Our offense should have been FIRE (that means really really good for all us old guys) this year but instead we were pedestrian without an identity and our stars regressed under our OC's tutelage. I will never forget the interview that Coach Clark did prior to the Marshall game, a lot was made of him being a WVa kid and how he grew up close in proximity to Marshall and cheering for them. The reporter asked if he knew/remembered Peterson from when he was young. Clark's response...., 'he was a legend'. I really think that is what happened here. Our coached viewed our current OC as a legend when he was a young kid and that influenced his decision. I say that only because if you look at our OC' s coaching arc, it is clearly in the downward protectory. After graduating from Marshall and working one year as a graduate assistant at Kentucky, he returned to coach at Marshall. He spent the next 8 seasons (very winning seasons for Marshall) coaching different positions and rising in responsibilities before leaving for the B10 in Minnesota where he worked from 1999-2006, but then he went to Iowa State for two years as a qb coach which can be viewed as nothing but a downward move at the time. Then he goes to FCS South Dakota for a year, which is clearly another downward move. His alma mater picks him back up for the next 3 seasons and gets him back to FBS. But then he leaves Marshall (was he let go by Doc or leave on his how????? Hard to believe the alum leaves willingly but I don't know the answer) and goes to Louisiana Teck for the next 3 years. He follows that up with 3-4 glorious years at ECU where their team completely nosedive. After that he gets a job as an Offensive Analyst (non coaching job which I can only infer means he had no coaching offers) at Missouri. He is able to parlay that job into his current gig because our Coach remembers him as a legend at Marshall when he was a qb. I don't think that anyone can disagree with the fact that since he left Marshall in 1998, his coaching resume has been on a downward trajectory as none of those teams experienced the continued success of the early 1990s Marshall squad. In fact it is a list of bottom dwellers that under achieved year in and year out. I really think this was Coach Clark's worst decision as a coach and it has haunted us ever since.mountaineerman wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 12:05 amCoach Clark’s first and biggest coaching blunder was not hiring a special teams coach . I don’t want to watch anymore games this season, but my head will give way to my heart, and my heart will most likely meltdown again, and again if a bowl game awaits.

If Coach Clark is as bad as you guys seem to think then it's DG's fault. He hired him.

App wholeheartedly deserved this loss. No excuses. I'm in doubt of beating Georgia Southern, can you imagine a Zac Thomas legacy of never beating GS?

Re: Louisiana at APP Game Day Thread
I’m not going to say much. I rarely ever read this forum anymore because I think it’s a toxic environment of reactionary takes and I wish it would get nuked into the sun.
My only big question is this: at the end of the first half, why the hell did we call timeout with 30 seconds? I even said to the people I was with, if Louisiana wanted a chance to score before the half at least make them burn one of their timeouts. We called timeout with :35 on the clock, could have run it down to under :10. UL gets the ball and adds three before the half think of how big that ended up being.
And just wow - what a slap in the face to our offensive unit as a whole that they literally took a safety to make it a field goal game because they didn’t think we could score, and we couldn’t. I’ve never seen a thing like that

Re: Louisiana at APP Game Day Thread
We will lose to Georgia Southern too. Just go ahead and prepare yourselves. If we have the same OC, with the same play calling next year, we will lose even more games.
Coaching is hard, but the offense this year wasn’t even one dimensional. It was like... half dimensional. I’ve become convinced that this year’s App team won 7 games in spite of their coaching, not because of it.

This OC is garbage. I could call a better game and i hardly played football in my time. This offense has been a terrible (compared to the last few years) all year. It goes deeper than just losing Evans and Sutton.

Is it a toxic environment of reactionary takes or a realistic view of the struggles our program is facing and the concern about those struggles?

Re: Louisiana at APP Game Day Thread
I think Clark does get some slack in the leash based on the circumstances surrounding this year, but if he doesn't see an issue with the current OC, Gillin should bring some objectivity to the conversation. I just don't see how a pre-season all conference QB can regress this much under his direction and there not be a change made.

Re: Louisiana at APP Game Day Thread
I remember 8-4 being a popular lowball guess as to our record in Clark’s first season. That looks to be a strong possibility, at best. Of course, those predictions were when we still had Wisconsin and Wake on the schedule.

We don't have the money to hire a new OC I bet. Sadly, we're stuck with this guy for a bit thanks to global events.

Its the old Dean Smith joke about holding MJ to low poimts.
What i want to know is where is the sunshine squad with all the stats about who was not playing and comparing stats of players last year. Gotta have those guys to tell us how stupid we are for thinking we are better than our conference bretheren

Thank you sir for that sober shot of reality.
My best friend went to ECU before they became what they are now— a struggling pile of crap. I’m sure I’ll catch hell for 365 days if we lose to them next year.
May we squeak out a win or two this year, and drive a stake in the heart of CRAPVID19.
Ugh.
