Up Next...Marshall

Unread post by Yosefus » Wed Nov 09, 2022 4:54 pm

Been a pretty quite week on the board. What will we have in store for Marshall or what will they have in store for us?
From what I have seen of them their defense is pretty good. No idea how their offense will come out vs our defense though.
Trying to temper my expectations. I know it's going to be a tough one.
What say the rest of you?

No telling what team shows up. Regardless of our thoughts on here one way or the other, this staff is coaching for their jobs or at least their credibility at this point.

Browsed through the bowl projections today. They don't really mean anything but if we get to 6 wins some of them were against interesting opponents. A win Saturday would go a long way towards getting us there. A good game plan and some solid sideline decisions will be critical. It's a very winnable game. If our D plays well I like our chances.

We have to get to 7 wins, but I think that's possible. Would rather it happen this week and next. Don't want our bowl season to come down to a trip to Statesboro.

It's been a long time since we have been so inconsistent this late in the season....

For my part, I cannot look that far ahead.
There is too much football to be played before I can start thinking about bowl invites.

Marshall is more physical than us, this could look a lot like the 2020 game in the trenches. Hope the team proves me wrong.

Marshall is wearing a commemorative helmet with all the names of the players that died in the plane crash.

The commemorating the 75 could be a factor against us. Marshall is physical. Our coaches need to light it up in the passing game, don't worry about the run. They are the stoutest we have faced on stopping run. Our defense needs to stop the run first, worry about thier pass game 2nd. We should be ok.
We get stuck trying to run the ball I don't think we will be successful.

It’s possible to get a bowl with 6 even with 2 FCS wins. It’s happened several times, and just requires a waiver with the NCAA. It’ll happen if there’s not enough 6 win teams nationally

I hate being a downer, but I don't have a good feeling about this one. Between those awesome color-changing paint helmets with the commemorative stripe, our incredibly inconsistent play, and our (from what I see on tv) failure to properly game plan for opponents, I think we get beat pretty bad.

Also worth noting, we wore helmet stripes again last week. The helmet stripes are bad luck. We haven't played a single good game with those things. Take the stripes off the helmets and put them on the sleeves!

Right, these next 3 games are consistent with the previous ones outside of UNC and A&M. We’re more talented than our opponents, but will we be able to execute and not make screw ups with decisions in game?

2-1 overall records vs Marshall and 3-0 vs Southern will save Clark’s seat from being on high heat going into next year. 1-2 and 2-1? Buckle up.

I really hope we don't start out with the exact same scripted up the gut runs to start the game, then the extremely difficult 30 yard pass on the right sideline (on 3rd and 9). Then after getting gashed for a quick score we rotate in back number 2 and get 4 yards to be followed by a 34 yard punt. The Marshall crowd will get more into the game and we crawl into the pitiful offensive shell again.

Worst case scenario

Perhaps we open with a play action pass to a tight end for 8 yards then hit them with a burst over the left side and actually impose our will.

Wasn't aware of that. Good to know.

Currently there are 51 eligible teams for the 82 slots. If we limp in going 1-2 the last 3 games and need a waiver should we really be playing in a bowl? Our wins would include Citadel and Bob Morris and of course what is becoming a less than impressive A&M win (and the miracle).

If we can get in with a waiver, sure we should go...kids deserve it given how hard they work...more practice time for young players, etc.
I hope it is a non-issue

Yep. I personally see a 3 game win streak to close it out.

Hope
