Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
Mid-Major Poll has us up to 4 after Gonzaga and Princeton both took a loss. I agree with this top 5. Saint Mary's has beaten Gonzaga and has had a tough schedule so i don't mind them ahead of us with 6 losses. If not for the NIU and Oregon State losses I bet we would be #1 though.

The NIU loss has been devastating to our NET ranking. They are far and away our worst loss.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 05, 2024 9:48 pmMid-Major Poll has us up to 4 after Gonzaga and Princeton both took a loss. I agree with this top 5. They are 5-14 with a ranking of 287 in NET. They are the (1) in our 10-1 quad 4 record.
Oregon State, Troy, and Asheville all have respectable mid-100 rankings.

Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
Seems fairly obvious that the only way a good mid major like App can safely get an at large bid is to schedule (if possible) and beat 2-3 good power conference teams. Those couple of glorified scrimmage games are meaningless other than giving us a tuneup or 2. The in state peer games (UNCW, A and Queens) are fun but you better win them. That being said had we beaten NIU but lost to Auburn would our NET be lower? Seems like we really can't do much about it on average unless some of our Belt teams improve and pull their weight.

Do I wish we hadn't lost to NIU and UNCA, sure, but this team is so much fun to watch. I haven't planned mid-week meals around App basketball in over a decade. Enjoying the ride for the next month until I get anxious for the SBC tournament.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd have been upset had I not looked. Seems like it's generally Thursday and Saturday but I guess we've had some Wednesday games.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 9:16 amMay want to check your TV listings for Wednesday this weekBigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 8:38 amI hear you. Agreed. I have App. St. as a favorite on ESPN app. So the next game pops up the day after the last one ended. I guess ESPN could be wrong, however, I have not had issues in the pastBigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 11:48 amThanks for the heads up. I'd have been upset had I not looked. Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
I know a loss is a loss, but to me, its just the NIU game that truly stands out as a stinker. UNCA was a fluke with a guy that had a once in a generation performance. One could say we should have guarded him closer, but the D was not bad, dude was jacking up 3s from all over the place, guarded. It was just his night . . . you know, everyone hits 8 threes in a half.

I share this same opinion. The UNCA player went nuclear. We played a mediocre game and would beat them 19/20 times.AppOrange wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 12:44 pmI know a loss is a loss, but to me, its just the NIU game that truly stands out as a stinker. I have no idea how we lost to NIU. 2nd game of the season rust, I guess.

College basketball is nutty. Kansas killed a good Houston team and loses to middle of the conference K State. Ga Tech beats Duke and UNC and getting whipped at home to Wake. Just finish strong

Yah ideally 2+ P5 teams and then 3+ solid mid majors (good A10 programs for example). Ideally some additional opportunities with an early season tournament.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 7:13 amSeems fairly obvious that the only way a good mid major like App can safely get an at large bid is to schedule (if possible) and beat 2-3 good power conference teams. The 2007 season was one of the few that was in that arena, look at these teams:
Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. College of Charleston, UCF, VCU, and Wichita State. Not to mention a good Davidson team.
Another tournament appearance would go a long ways toward helping scheduling.

Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
A lot has been said about our location, airport access, etc. It's got to be difficult for a good mid major program to entice any power conference team (Auburn) to come to Boone as there is really no incentive for them to do it, especially during the week. There aren't but so many weekends available before conference games begin for everyone. Looks like you need to get into one or two of the good early season tournaments but the flip side is that even a win or two gets forgotten about by February in the minds of the committee and the other powers that be. A surprising win by a decent to good mid major over a good power team is usually written off as an early season surprise. Is Auburn's loss to us hurting them at all?agentpaul001 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 6:36 amYah ideally 2+ P5 teams and then 3+ solid mid majors (good A10 programs for example). Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
I wonder how this season will affect our scheduling going forward. Maybe eliminate or reduce the D2 games and parlay Auburn coming in into getting another high major to come in.

Beating Auburn on national television may actually make any high majors reticent to come to Boone.

Re: App Receiving Votes…No Longer Just One
As if they weren’t already? Mid major status will always hurt our scheduling more than one win.
If nothing else maybe it’ll get us consideration for better early season tournaments and maybe relationships and deals can be struck from there.
