Re: Huge scheduling news coming
The two teams that I would most like to see us schedule would be Marshall and Charlotte. The Sun Belt doesn't provide any name opponents or geographical rivals (outside of GSU), so I think both of those would generate a lot of fan interest.
Charlotte in particular would have some large benefits:
1. Recruiting: Play a game every other year in the state's top HS football area.
2. Easy travel: There would be a TON of black & gold in the stands for App @ UNCC.
3. Media interest: More coverage from Charlotte media and possibly other in-state media.
4. It's a winnable game: The fact that they're FCS next year is irrelevant to me since we're bowl ineligible. After that, it's a likely FBS win until if/when their program gets a lot better.

San Antonio is a great town. I had two separate week-long trips there a couple of years ago and loved the place. River walk is fantastic. If we ever do go play there I certainly recommend we turn that town black and gold.
Re: Huge scheduling news coming
Hopefully when App plays Texas State a lot will make the trip. San Marcos is only about 45 minutes north of San Antonio.AppinATL wrote:San Antonio is a great town. There's nothing compelling about UNCC as far as their "name" goes. Geography and QC exposure are the selling points when it comes to incentives to play them.EastHallApp wrote:The two teams that I would most like to see us schedule would be Marshall and Charlotte. And please call them their proper name: UNCC. The last thing we need are our own fans validating their little-man rebranding efforts. It's like calling ULL, "Louisiana."

UNC-P, Campbell, or Coastal Carolina would be easy travel for me.moehler wrote:we might only need to look at Cobb to maybe get an hint on who we play, he has said in the past he preferred to play teams in our region that were easy travel for our fans.
But I remember some of us saying we were to good to go to Coastal and play...hmmmm....just checked their record and ranking.....9-0 and ranked 5th in the country

What do you consider "a lot?"

Re: Huge scheduling news coming
There are only a few teams in the MAC and CUSA that don't have 4 OOC games scheduled for next year. Of those, Buffalo appears to be the only one with an opening for a road game in 2014. I suppose it's possible for buyouts or rescheduling, but can we afford to do that?

Right, didn't mean to imply that they are a name program. Just that there are reasons why a series with them would be advantageous for App and appealing to many App fans.

Will be a C-USA team in 2014 per T-Bowman:
Flynn would not confirm which FBS opponents the Mountaineers will play, but that a home-and-home series for 2014 and '15 will involve a team from Conference USA, a home-and-home series for 2015 and '16 will be against another C-USA program and a home-and-home set for 2016 and '17 will involve a team from the Mid-American Conference.

Re: Huge scheduling news coming
Only MTSU, North Teaxs, and Rice have an opening in both 2014 and 2015.
MTSU is the only one that makes sense, but that would give MTSU three OOC away games in one of the years which doesn't make sense.
Someone is buying out of an FCS game to sign the 2014-2015 series, so it's a crap shoot.

Re: Huge scheduling news coming
Was talking with AppDawg about this, and the only team that truly makes sense is ECU. Yeah, they wont be CUSA in 2015, but it has the better fit than anyone else in CUSA, if you exclude teams going on the road for 3 OOC games. If they alluded to a team that was CUSA this year and AAC next year, they would have let cat out of the bag. Could be totally wrong, but I was told the teams that were being scheduled were, "ones that fans would like"

Re: Huge scheduling news coming
The hopeful side of me thinks it could be ECU. Technically, if we announce in the next 3 weeks they will still be C-USA. By "hiding" under the C-USA moniker our administration is able to make an announcement on the heels of Southern's announcement within the last week without giving away who the opponent is. Had the release stated a "future AAC" everyone would have known it was ECU.Saint3333 wrote:Only MTSU, North Teaxs, and Rice have an opening in both 2014 and 2015.

Again, this is purely speculative on my part but it the announcement and ECU's future home and away schedules for '14 and '15 fit.

Re: Huge scheduling news coming
One the fans would like could be Marshall and they are buying out the Norfolk St. Game. I hope you guys are right, that would a huge signing in the first year. I thought it would be five years or so before we'd get them to Boone.

These are the two teams that I would like to see us play for many of the reasons that you have listed. However I think ODU is more likely than Marshall. Marshall thinks they are far ahead and superior to us, not to mention they have some of the worst fans in college football. I have to admit though I was on the field after many of our victories against Randy Moss and Marshall!
