I would disagree that they "gutted the roster" - they kept all the core guys except Smith, and he isn't really a #1 anymore. But to the extent they did, they answer is mostly that they couldn't afford to pay guys like Ginn, Mitchell, Munnerlyn etc. what other teams would. They don't have the cap room now, and more importantly, they need to clear room to sign Newton and Kuechly to long-term deals. They're already looking at probably losing Hardy after this season. Thank Hurney's bad contracts for that.
If they could pay Jake $20 million to play for the Browns they could pay to keep Smith who at one time was the only wr on their team to have actually caught a TD in a game. I know that was another time, but it just shows how wacky they are. (I know they changed GM's but I think it has got worse not better). As far as money goes, why pay a guy to be 3rd string QB when he may never play and never move to first string. AE could have suited out as a return, wr or QB for very little money.
My problem with the Panthers is that they are going to have to stop "building" the team and play some FB. About everytime they get one position decided they change out several other critical ones. (I know all teams pick up players every year, but usually they are filling a position or picking someone for the future). Fans and more important PSL owners are about tired of it. They want to see the team come together and play a few seasons as a team. Most players will extend at least one season at a lower cost if they know there are cap problems and they want to stay. If they don't want to stay you have to put a "F" tag on them and then you're really in trouble.
They looked like they had started putting something together and figuring out some players were in the wrong position last year so what do they do this year....change everything. Let face it Cam isn't a "hit anything on the field" type QB. He was just learning how to throw to his WR's and now he's has a new crew. He's going in with little practice and if it takes him a season or two to learn his receivers they'll be gone.
Delhomme was another of Hurney's mistakes. Say what you will about Gettleman, but he is not overpaying to keep his guys around. Fans are sentimental - myself included - but you just can't run a team that way in the NFL.
Cutting Smith, as I understand it, wasn't really about money and in fact didn't really save them much in terms of cap space. Apparently they felt that he was a bad locker room influence and was getting in the way of Newton becoming a team leader. I doubt any of us know enough to have an informed opinion there.
To your point about changing up the receivers, the one thing I didn't understand about this offseason was why let Lafell go and then sign Cotchery, who's older and smaller, for about the same amount. I am no huge fan of Lafell's but at least there was some familiarity there.
As for AE, I wouldn't mind seeing him get a tryout as a backup QB for a team that runs a lot of read option stuff. I know he's too small to start, but I would think there might be some value in having a backup who could come in for a half or a game and run the same offense if your starter gets knocked out.
