A lot of those laws came into place about 100 years ago after some third-parties such as T.R Bull Moose and Debs and the Socialists started growing. Neither party really beleives in open and free elections, as both have been very much a part of keeping the duopoly in power with a few exceptions. Those exceptions have generally been in states such as NY, Minn and a few others that had just enough of a 3rd party movement that there were enough people to complain loud enough to keep the ballot access laws not as bad as some states pushed through.

To be fair he did serve two terms on town council. Lets look at the competition. A hairstylist, a college senior and a cowboy that wouldn't take off his cowboy hat at the town forum. If a legitimate candidate had come forward a D or R wouldn't matter. It was a joke of a field. Unfortunately he had the best qualifications.

I don't know the specifics of your case and what has happened the last two decades but there is a long history of ballot restrictions in this state and many others. Now with that said, it is possible to get write-in and official status in NC, it just takes a lot of work which waste resources for the campaign. If what you say is truly correct then that is a court case waiting to happen and something I would think the ALCU (your favorite organization ) might consider taking up. What city are you referring to by the way?

He served on a town council that made the building ordinances untenable.

I really hope the Town Council does the right thing and loosens the restrictions on construction. There's way too many vacant structures in town.

Considering all how Democrats won, I'd say it mattered because of the backlash against McCrory and the Board of Elections (Eggers in particular). They lost the race for the right-leaning candidates more than anything.

And yes, the college student was a better candidate than the owner of the Condeferate store.
