9ers still delirious based on their coach's comment from the Observer, especially if he thinks that's what did them in.
The Mountaineers broke the game open in the second half on three big plays - a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown by Thomas Hennigan, a 90-yard touchdown catch-and-run from Thomas to Sutton and fumble recovery in the end zone by Auston Exford.
“Three goofy plays, three plays right there, kind of shot us,” said 49ers coach Brad Lambert.

Re: UNCC Game Thread
I agree, but unlike in the past, it is clear that this offense has enough firepower to overcome mistakes. Receiver depth is ridiculous and we know what Moore can do once he starts getting going.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Sep 09, 2018 4:14 amThus far Zac Thomas and the receiving corps are living up to their billing and more. Not sure we've seen the likes in a long time, if ever to this degree.
Running game has been slow and the OL has struggled to get push at the line of scrimmage. Obvious teams have stacked the box but that has been the case in the past as well. We haven't been great on defense on third down and look a little shaky on KO return coverage. But, this team will only get better moving forward as the youth movement continues to mature.

Re: UNCC Game Thread
Just finished watching the game, complete domination by App. I hope at some point UNCC gets more competitive as we need a nice regional rivalry considering the conference we are in, but they are a long, long way away. They will have another losing season playing in front of a half empty stadium and then will be starting all over again in year 7 after they fire their HC and entire staff...next year in Boone will be even worse. If anyone from UNCC tells you they were competitive tell them they were not and remind them the object is to score touchdowns.

We played very well but not perfect and that is a great thing. The guys played a very smooth game until there was no doubt left.
3 areas to improve:
1. Kickoff coverage
2. 3rd down defensive efficiency
3. Run blocking

I think UNC-Concord and App state owe each other.
We got their AD fired, we probably just helped their coach get fired, and they prevented us from joining that dumpster fire C-USA.

Totally impressed with our receiving corps and Thomas of course...and Sutton was in beast-mode once again. Hennigan's punt return was awesome...the fumble recovery...so many positives. Can't wait to watch the replay...want to see the touchback call on that interception return which happened right in front of us and it looked like a TD to me. Was furious when they didn't show the replay on the big screen.

5. Securing the football near the goal line. The rule is the rule. CANNOT fumble near the goal line. Took 14 points off the board (7 of which we got back on the next play).

Rewatching game now. Rosinski says we has a nice crowd here but way more niner fans. Not sure what he was looking at. We had more than 1/3 of the stadium. Nice job by App crown booing Ref for mispronunciation. Clt Observer made mention of it. Oh and nicest 15,000 seat stadium I’ve been in.

Re: UNCC Game Thread
I loved the Lambert awww schhhucks style quotes about how the blowout happened from his perspective "three goofy plays there, kinda shot ourselves ya know?"
Hey Brad, just watch the line play on both fronts or the athletic abilities of all our skill players vs yours. There wasn't anything goofy there, you just got your ass beat. At least ODUs Bobby Wilder admitted it when we did them in.

Re: UNCC Game Thread
No doubt about the App domination. I actually thought we were a little flat last night, although we played hard when we needed to. It really is hard to get excited and focused about playing a team that you out class. That being said, Charlotte has found a decent QB and they will be better than last year. They have a decent D (like last year) and obviously planned on stopping the running game, but couldn't come close to defending both the run and the pass. I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get the running game going though. Hopefully that will come as our rebuilding OL gets more reps.
Regarding Lambert's comments....I kind begrudge him. The coach HAS to say SOMETHING to put a positive look on it for his team in order to keep him guys motivated after a loss like that. The truth is that once the App O took over, we showed that we could score on any possession. I actually think those plays gave Charlotte MORE opportunity because it put their O back on the field and kept our D on the field for most of the second half. Ours guys had to be getting tired, so it was impressive that they didn't give up a TD.
This one is in the books. Let's go beat Southern Miss at the Rock! GO APPS!!!!

Re: UNCC Game Thread
His plan was to stop the run and eat up clock. He somewhat succeeded or the score could have been worse.
Our run blocking will improve as the season goes along. We are loaded with weapons, maybe the most I have seen in 40 years of watching App football.
Got to improve tackling and the fumbles on the effort plays.

"We had more than 1/3 of the stadium." Others are sayin' 60% to 2/3. I guess it's moot at this point. The overall domination of the evening is a matter of record. The poor '9ers know way down deep that they got their heads handed to 'em.
They actually did stuff our running game more than I expected. I'll give 'em that much credit--but no more!

I've never been good at estimating the percentages of attendance and don't claim accuracy but I feel confident that at least half the bodies in the stadium were App fans.

My assessment....App State fans stood and yelled for the plays on the field. UNCC fans stood and yelled for the free T-shirts. Proud to be a Mountaineer.
