Now that’s it’s over serious question. What is/are the main aspects that we need in a new coach at App? Let’s assume that we can’t really get the all encompassing great offensive/defensive minded fantastic recruiting guy with that history of turning around down programs who is in tune with the Portal and above all else will theoretically stay 5 years.
Is recruiting quality NC high school guys big?
How about being able identify and lure quality players from other schools via the Portal?
Do we need a CFO type guy who brings or hires a staff that he trusts on game day or one like Drink who wears 3 hats?
Do we look for a quality retread who isn’t old but has experience and will fill the gap until we find that perfect fit? Many fans are still a bit delusional and believe that some miracle worker of a coach is dying to take over a program that just fired one of its own and will do it for p5 coordinator type money.
When Satt left part of me kind of envisioned him going to Louisville, banking his $10m, ultimately getting fired and then returning home without the need of a huge salary and would let us devote extra cash to quality coordinators. I really can’t see that happening at this point and imagine firing yet another App guy in 3 years after some 7-5 seasons.
We need to get back to finding those guys with chips on their shoulders who want to prove they are P4 worthy but also want to stay in Boone and play. One aspect of our program that I think needs to go away is “couple year rebuild”. I agree that if done right a school can reload in a year and go from either or average to good.
In today's game you have to be able to recruit and retain quality players while also hitting the portal to fill gaps or upgrade positions. To me, that's just about the most important quality in a coach. Jimmys and Joes over Xs and Os.
I don't think App has the budget for a CEO type coach because that kind of coach wants a high salary plus high salaries for his coordinators. It's going to be hard to find OCs and DCs who want to do more work with more responsibility for less pay. I think you need a Drinkwitz-esque guy in that regard.
I think there are plenty of coaches out there who would love to be in Boone, whether up-and-coming or older guys looking for one more shot.
I completely agree that whoever is next needs to get players who want to work hard, get better everyday, and play with a chip on their shoulder. It's been mentioned on this board many times before that it's been a long time since we had guys who played "nasty." Not dirty players, but guys who enjoy tackling and blocking other dudes into the bench.
