Maybe it’s time for a HC from the defensive side of the ball who hires a top notch OC who is allowed near total control of the offensive reins.
During Clark’s tenure, I often wondered if the OC’s had full control of playcalling. In certain situations, we tended to see some of the same playcalling decisions being made, regardless of who the OC was a the time. And most of those playcalling decisions consistently sucked.

Another question- was Ponce’s intention to run vanilla schemes/plays like what we saw this season? Or was Clark leaning on him? Not that it matters now, but you have to wonder how much say Clark had in what was being called.

Now that’s it’s over serious question. What is/are the main aspects that we need in a new coach at App? Let’s assume that we can’t really get the all encompassing great offensive/defensive minded fantastic recruiting guy with that history of turning around down programs who is in tune with the Portal and above all else will theoretically stay 5 years.

Is recruiting quality NC high school guys big?
How about being able identify and lure quality players from other schools via the Portal?
Do we need a CFO type guy who brings or hires a staff that he trusts on game day or one like Drink who wears 3 hats?
Do we look for a quality retread who isn’t old but has experience and will fill the gap until we find that perfect fit? Many fans are still a bit delusional and believe that some miracle worker of a coach is dying to take over a program that just fired one of its own and will do it for p5 coordinator type money.

When Satt left part of me kind of envisioned him going to Louisville, banking his $10m, ultimately getting fired and then returning home without the need of a huge salary and would let us devote extra cash to quality coordinators. I really can’t see that happening at this point and imagine firing yet another App guy in 3 years after some 7-5 seasons.

We need to get back to finding those guys with chips on their shoulders who want to prove they are P4 worthy but also want to stay in Boone and play. One aspect of our program that I think needs to go away is “couple year rebuild”. I agree that if done right a school can reload in a year and go from either or average to good.

DG had a list and started making calls yesterday. There is no deadline for a decision but it is on a fast track. Interviews based on applicants availability as early as today. BOT meets Thursday and Friday. They have to approve hire and contract. Can do that by conference call over the weekend or Monday. If needed. I don’t know that’s the target but it points in that direction.

It very well could've been mentioned more than once, but I'm not about to go combing thru 18 pages of comments.....

BUT, and that's a big but, is Ponce in consideration? Is he interested? Does it make sense considering this seasons results as well as last? Idk, but he seems capable...especially if he didn't have full play calling control as hinted at.

In today's game you have to be able to recruit and retain quality players while also hitting the portal to fill gaps or upgrade positions. To me, that's just about the most important quality in a coach. Jimmys and Joes over Xs and Os.

I don't think App has the budget for a CEO type coach because that kind of coach wants a high salary plus high salaries for his coordinators. It's going to be hard to find OCs and DCs who want to do more work with more responsibility for less pay. I think you need a Drinkwitz-esque guy in that regard.

I think there are plenty of coaches out there who would love to be in Boone, whether up-and-coming or older guys looking for one more shot.

I completely agree that whoever is next needs to get players who want to work hard, get better everyday, and play with a chip on their shoulder. It's been mentioned on this board many times before that it's been a long time since we had guys who played "nasty." Not dirty players, but guys who enjoy tackling and blocking other dudes into the bench.

Football Scoop reporting Neal Brown is a central figure in App State search, and could be in play at Charlotte, as well.

There are varying company sizes....mom&pop, middle market, larger private companies, public companies. All need CEOs. However, the tasks performed may vary (I e. Getting more into daily execution or less into daily execution). IMO, we are analagous to a middle market company. The CEO is the visionary..but also has to wash the dishes from time to time when needed.

I don't really get why Brown wouldn't be an appealing candidate. And no, the fact that he was fired from WVU does not dissuade me.

He performed well at Troy, but he was 37-35 at West Virginia. That doesn't exactly scream great coach to me. And right now we need a great coach.

Speaking of West Virginia, odd to me that Rich Rodriguez wasn't worth a look here in 2019, but is in the mix to go back to WVU now.

T4 answered the question perfectly. His experience at Troy is irrelevant at this point, that was a different world.

If we interview OCs or DCs from P4s, how would the App admin be able to critique their performance with NIL and today's transfer portal?

If Neal browns buyout structure is similar to most, his buyout would be offset by any jobs he got in the future right? Pay him a low salary and let him spend an extra million on the staff.
