I’m stunned at how many parents seem perfectly happy to allow their kids to live at home until they’re 30 or even older.
This is happening because of economics, and was entirely caused by the greed of the current generation of older folks.

Entirely serious. I don't know the level of depth to explain here. Simply put, the transition from a consumer-focused to a shareholder-focused economic system beginning in the 80's. Boomers ignored the threat of climate change when decisive action was possible, dismantled public investments in social programs that could have strengthened opportunities for future generations, and ushered in an era of economic insecurity that has left their children and grandchildren poorer and more anxious. When my generation came to economic prominence (I'm 36), it was already too late. Inflation-adjusted wages of non-billionaires have been stagnant for four decades while the economic divide between a few thousand people and the rest of us exceeds that of France just prior to the French Revolution. This has snowballed, particularly since 2016, and allowed the most wealthy to put their fingers on the scales of every system we have. Citizens United et al. Our current system is a mixture of consumer capitalism, fascism, and feudalism, and there's nothing any 30-something can do about it. Older folks moving to smaller homes are selling their family-sized homes to private equity for cash offers. Millennials and Gen Z need two professional incomes just to live like a tradesman with a stay-at-home wife in the 70's. It's completely f*cked.

I know dozens of boomers who are kind amazing people who are no more complicit in the creation of this modern dystopia than I am, but as far as who was the working and voting age generation when our nation began to take this path is clear.

Anyway, I'm sure those two drunk kids are ass holes when they're sober, they just have more shame and self awareness before all those Busch lites. In vino vertitas.

Well, this could open a deep conversation, but basically, kids are spoiled beyond belief these days and behave that way because they get away with it and haven’t been raised to behave better.

The Chick Fil A that I frequent has implemented a policy that essentially doesn’t allow teens inside unless they’re with a parent during certain times of the day. At one point they had to close the inside for a couple of hours after school because the kids had become so destructive and disrespectful.

In my opinion, poor parenting is the root cause of it.

I’m stunned at how many parents seem perfectly happy to allow their kids to live at home until they’re 30 or even older. Forever a child I guess.

All that being said, there are some great kids out there.

You (we, us, everyone) should also feel obligated to step in and correct a kid acting foolish. If their parents won't, someone needs to. Simply complaining about what their parent's aren't teaching them doesn't fix anything.

We were in Section 111 Friday night. There was one UNCC student two rows in front of us. For most of the game, he seemed okay. During the latter part of the 3rd Quarter he took his shirt off (violation of BofA rules) but I didn't say anything about it. Then, halfway through the 4th, he started giving an App fan/student grief who was sitting behind him/in front of us. I didn't see the App guy direct any comments towards him- he was just having a good time with his group. My wife tired of his berating the App guy and called him out- told him to turn his eyes front and cut it out. He became belligerent towards us, making ageist and slightly threatening statments. My wife got security to come down, as I was engaging the young man, and they kicked him out. This is another anectdote which shows there are poor fans for every team.
You must have been the guy leading the "Another Mountaineer First Down!" calls. I was one row back and several seats over and saw that happen. He was using a few choice words as those 3 or 4 people were leaving.

Two points. Don't blame us GenX'ers. I do have it easier than my very late Millennial and very early GenZ kids, it is a far cry from my Boomer parents. Then again, my father had a union job that was head and shoulders better than any furniture or hosiery mill in the Catawba Valley. Made all the difference in my life growing up.

Secondly, you mention 40 years. I would suggest 50 to incorporate Carter and his push to deregulate a lot of industry that cost a ton of union jobs, then Regan's war on the working class that continued with NAFTA costing millions of more union jobs that Clinton signed into law. There is just no pressure to bring up the floor on wages. I do see some changes with younger folks pushing back in a variety of ways.

And yes, plenty of Boomers are very decent people.

Boomers - “As long as I get my social security check each month, I’m good.”

Gen X’ers - “Good for you; after paying in for all these years, we’ll never get social security.”

Everyone else - “Why are you crying? We won’t get it either…and none of us will ever be able to afford a house.”

You are really throwing it all in the pot together and while I agree with some of your points, you are also taking some creative liberties with others. Just causally tying “climate change” to wages and blaming boomers for it is dubious at best. And I’m not sure what dismantling investment into
Social programs means. All we do is throw money at social programs with mixed results to put it kindly. You also leave out the complete scam that are many universities
these days. Kids are going hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to obtain bullshit degrees that don’t earn them anything in the work force. Conversely, while not sexy, Kids who are attending trade schools are doing much better financially and aren’t starting out under debt they can’t get out from under. And I’m curious what combined total you arrive at for two professionals to live in the United States. I’m not slingin mud and I want to be respectful of your opinion but saying Boomers have turned our country into a dystopian wasteland seems a bit hyperbolic. And like I said, there are points you make I agree with, I’m simply pointing out there are other variables both good and bad that are
Contributing and every generation plays a part.

Broad brush explanation with some good points based on the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, but it can't really be blamed all on the boomers. You use an example of climate change but that wasn't really even an issue until the elections of the late 2000 (06-on). So from that point forward it has been an issue and yet very often the climate candidate does not win and these are all elections that your millennials have been able to vote. Can't really blame that on boomers. A young Al Gore did warn of it in his 1988 Presidential campaign but he didn't win the primary and the issue really went nowhere for almost 20 years. The problem isn't the boomers, it is the extremely rich people who control policy. When I went to App (88-93) every town in the south, including Boone, had factories that employed a large portion of the population. These factories could support a family on one income and provide. Within 10-15 years these were almost all gone. This wasn't because of boomers it was because the owners realized they could make more money moving the factories overseas and used their influence to get politicians to pass favorable laws to allow them to move their factories. Again, this issue was never a prominent issue in any campaign until your generation could vote. It wasn't the boomers, it was, is and always will be the extremely rich people that have shaped and directed our policies and economy. Sure some of those people are boomers but we can't blame an entire generation on a handful of bad actors.

As an aside I can’t recall very often (as a teen and young college student) ever really hearing people my age telling adults to F off and I didn’t hear lots of cursing in general around teachers or other adults. I’m not saying we didn’t have colorful language in our groups but generally speaking we seemed to, for the most part either respect adults or feared repercussions. My wife is a high school administrator and the stuff she shares sometimes is crazy. They have a saying at work- You can’t make this shit up. Part of the problem as I see it is the further decay of the home. More and more parents don’t back up the teacher or administrators and either side with the kid or just don’t deal with it.

Yeah I guess climate change causes college kids to drink more and it’s more expensive these days for beer so after drinking so much they are forced to move back in with their parents until they are 30 because the millennials and boomers have eroded the financial system. Or something Ike that.

My number 1 old man belief is that smart phones are to blame for a lot of this. The degradation of the nuclear family isn't coming from divorce (which is way down) or new parenting styles, but from the people within that family not actually interacting with each other. I have high school students who spend 40+ hours of screen time on their phones a week. They're working a full-time job just scrolling Tik Tok or sending Snapchats. When most of your day is spent in virtual reality, you cease to know how to behave in actual reality.

Read "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neal Postman, "Stolen Focus" by Johann Hari, and "Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt and the behavior of young folks won't seem so surprising.
